  1. I give up! LONG!

Thought I should clarify something. As pH goes up, CO2 content goes down with a constant alk. At a dKH of 10, or something like 3.7 meQ, pH of 7.9, there will be approx. 3-4ppm CO2. I've got a chart from a mag. article, but there are various ones on archive threads. This is an easy way of...
  2. I give up! LONG!

your photoperiod seems great!! I wish I had the $$ to run something along those lines. Y'know, I was the one that suggested the lettuce nudies; you're right. They are much more apt to eat the bryopsis than the hair algae. I've never had either problem, so I was going on memory. OOPS!! I...
  3. VHO Lights

great link. Incidentally, there was an article in FAMA last november about the same thing. Too bad I skimped when I bought my ballasts...I got them for CHEAP; worked at the lfs for a couple years..the wholesale of the icecaps is really negligible compared to mailorder prices. I couldn't...
  4. I give up! LONG!

That's right. GGHD (god*@#! green hair algae) is evil, and must be destroyed. I haven't seen caddyshack in years. I feel inspired.
  5. moving or getting rid of colonial anenomes

I've had good success using a large-bore i.v. needle and injecting kalk right into the base of them. That is, of course, if you don't want to save them. It's important to use the large bore needle, not an insulin syringe from the local drugstore. Even well-mixed kalk has enough little...
  6. copper grounding probe

Just thought I'd add that grounding probes are cheap. TAAM makes a titanium grounding probe for $12.90 at champion.
  7. I got flat worms, need Ideas to get rid of them

I have sprung's vol2 at my computer table. The nudie spoken of is 'Chelidonura varians' and eats the 'convolutrioba retrogemma' flatworms. On the flatworm killing additive, I should add sprung goes into detail that "the sudden death of a large population of flatworms in the tank will turn the...
  8. I give up! LONG!

Couple things. What is your photoperiod?? Cutting back on the time all your lamps are lit might help. Also, I personally think bluelegs are better at controlling algae than redlegs, IMHO. Also, my bluelegs don't eat my snails(at least, not that often). There are a few different nudies...
  9. Moving tank Questions

I just wanted to say that I wasn't saying it can't be done. I suppose the guy I referred to was less than ultra-careful...just use caution, and, lift with your legs!!!lollol. I got the 'weak back' gene from my father. Good luck.
  10. Moving tank Questions

Like Scott said, you can get buckets from local places--I'd also add that most bakeries get malt syrup and pastry fillings in these buckets as well. I'd be very careful if you're moving a 55 with 4" of wet sand in it. That's got to be 100lbs of sand alone. I just moved a 75 a couple months...
  11. drilling glass?

blah blah blah. I sound like a two year old. Sorry. I get a little defensive sometimes.
  12. No clue about this one..

Sounds like a cuke to me, too. I've seen them over the years, and have even sold them at a shop I worked at. They are very interesting to watch; I could never get a photo of these little guys. I finally have a good macro setup on my camera, but alas I never got one of these babys for myself...
  13. drilling glass?

pps...for the mechanically inclined, the size of a drill---for example 1/2" vs. 3/8" refers to the size bit the drill can hold, not the chuck size.
  14. drilling glass?

Generally, most non mechanically-inclined people would consider all the steps involved rather difficult. I realize that for those of us that are, we might consider it easy. The statement I made concerning difficulty applied to amount of time, money, and energy expended. Not the actual holding...
  15. Storing mixed saltwater?

great idea, ryan! I actually have one of those with my backpacking stuff. I personally have a rubbermaid container that's roughly 30 gallons or so for top-off and kalkmixing. When I do water changes (very rarely, I'm afraid) I mix the water and circulate/aerate for a few days. At my last...
