  1. Breeding cleaner Shrimp

No offense, but I don't know you from Adam. I'd be delighted to take a look at your evidence/proof, but I wouldn't be much of a scientist if I just "took your word" for it. What procedures did you follow to make this determination? What was your experimental protocol? Has anybody else reproduced...
  2. Breeding cleaner Shrimp

As Luis M. points out, L. amboinensis (if that is the shrimp you have) are simultaneous hermaphrodites, and it is normal for all healthy adults in a group to carry eggs at the same time. His information on storing sperm may be mistaken. At least one study has found that the shrimp can store...
  3. What does "phacelloid" mean?

IIRC, phacelloid means "roughly parallel" in layman's terms...
  4. Adhesive for gluing rocks together?

Personally, I only use adhesives that specify they are safe for potable water. I haven't run into any problems using that rule of thumb, YMMV.
  5. Cell-pore....

Mostly because I think a blue background on a tank looks almost as bad as seeing the wall behind the tank... I'm thinking of it as sort of an in-tank background that stuff can grow on....
  6. 54gal Corner tank question (lighting options).

sboice, What are you looking at keeping in the tank? With all due respect to those who will tell you you have only one or the other option, without knowledge of your goals for the tank, it is hard to say what you will require for lighting. Since you stipulate that you cannot go MH, you will...
  7. Worried about the move of the sandbed this Friday!!!

I've moved a few sand beds and never had a problem. Just scooped the sand into containers of a size I could carry, made sure there was a little water on top of the sand, and moved the stuff. Dumped it into the new tank with no real regard to what was top/bottom before. Filled the tank, put in...
  8. Worried about the move of the sandbed this Friday!!!

IMHO, thats a bunch of BS. ROFL!
  9. Crab ID

Does your flashlight project red or white light? I have a piece of clear red plastic over the lens on my light, and I've never noticed anything running from it... Maybe you could try that and get some confirmation on his behavior?
  10. how do you do it

My first SW tank was a 30. I eventually broke it down to a 20. Small tanks can be a lot of fun, but I've found that they are actually more work than larger tanks. As to the bit about you not working... Why not? I hear all these claims about unemployment and people not being able to find a job...
  11. drilling glass ?

I drilled a few tanks myself a few years back. In very short order I realized that without a drill press, it was an exercise in futility. I just don't have the stability to do it. My dad manages to get perfect holes in glass with a normal electric hand drill. Perhaps you have a steady-handed...
  12. Food for thought...

I second JohnD's suggestion. I made my own food for quite some time, and while it was kind of cool to do, I didn't see any change when I switched to Ocean Nutrition stuff instead. Well, maybe a bit of a change: My wife quit complaining about me spilling fish food in the freezer....
  13. Crab ID

I don't want to sound too contrarian here, but my personal philosophy is to leave anything alone unless I see it misbehaving. FWIW, if the crab isn't hurting anything, I'd leave it alone, especially since nobody has identified it beyond "I had one that looked like that". A lot of harmless...
  14. where can I buy bulkheads?

The bulkheads I buy are listed on the savco site as a "bulkhead kit". I get the 1" (1 3/4" hole) ones. Next time I'll probably order 10 or 15 from them. That will set me up for a few years and save me a few bucks. Thanks, Dan!
  15. Storage tanks

Once again, I see cwa46 and I coming at things from different directions and getting equally satisfactory results... I looked at the cost of bladder-type tanks and kent float switches this past weekend. I am inclined to agree that if you already have the tank, the float switch is probably a...
