Aqualogic controller...set to 1 degree sensitivity (it's min.) It keeps the upside swing to less than a degree.

  4. need some fish catching tricks please

At the risk of being flamed, as a LAST resort you can try a hook and line. I had two very large engineer gobies who were playing havoc with my DSB. I tried all the tricks in the book for months to catch them without even getting close! I used thread and a very small fly fishing hook with some...
  5. who has a fish tank on a second floor?

This topic always spurs a lot of debate... But, people have: - parties and dancing on second floors - grand pianos on second floors - couches crowded with people on second floors - etc., etc. And, chances are you are placing your aquarium close to a wall...and there's a pretty good chance...

  7. Do I need a sand sifter?

My experience has been as follows: Engineer gobys are an overkill! I had a couple that did a great job of cleaning the sand, but moved it way too much and made a mess of things. Sand sifting stars tend to be rather restricted in a 55. (I had one in my 58.) What does do the trick are...

  9. Marine Retail in Connecticut?

It's a bit of a hike for you, but Reef and Fin in Stamford, CT is great. Chris (the owner) and Laura are very knowledgeable and helpful And, the have a great selection of SPS and other corals. Prices seem to be pretty fair...especially compared to House of Fins, their competitor in Greenwich, CT
  10. Water Changes.

Water changes of 20% once a month should do it for you. The skimmer should be cleaned weekly. All that gunk (skimmate) is the bad stuff you are exporting from your tank. The skimmer gets less efficient as it builds up. Why do you have a filter too?? IMO, filters, sponges, etc. are just...
  11. New Digital Temperature Controller, need your input

Sounds to me like if you go to 10 set points each, you effectively meet the objective of letting the reefer choose his/her temps. Of course, if you want to get real fancy, you could add variable set points by time of day and time of year to simulate seasonality and daytime vs nighttime...
  12. mangroves??

Good for nutrient export...both nitrates and phosphates. Can be used in conjunction with macroalgae.
  13. New Digital Temperature Controller, need your input

Assuming you are doing this as a commercial venture, I think you are painting yourself into a corner. While many reefers target 80 degrees as the "ideal" temperature, there are probably an equal number who target 76 degrees. Trying to standardize on something that is not inherently standard...
  14. New Digital Temperature Controller, need your input

I'm being dense here... First, why do I need two set points each for high and low. One high set point and one low set point would do it. Then, I wouldn't design the controller to only work with a fix set. They should be adjustable to suit individual preference, since there are so many...
