  1. New Setup (Again) opinions needed from all....

I have a very similar in-wall set up similar to what you are proposing (6' long 130g in an 8' wall). A great opportunity to "go big" especially seeing as you have a fair bit of room to play with behind the tank. A smaller tank size (90 g) sunk into an 8' wall span could appear smallish compared...
  2. Clown Trigger in a 240g?

Never had a clown but my Picasso got along well with other fish that were bigger than him (they all were) as well as corals. Caution that they can be quite rowdy. My Picasso liked to gulp mouthfuls of sand and spew all over the corals and rock that had to be blown off regularly. Inverts (snails...
  3. A nightmare with a moral then a question.

Scifii thanks for your reply. Yes it was rodi water, not tap water that caused my tank demise over 5 or 6 days. You might note from my previous posts that I'm pretty sure I physically broke the float valve when doing maintenance on the skimmer which is located within a couple inches clearance of...
  4. It's sad when a reef site doesn't get updated in years...

Reefkeepers Rule #1245 "If it ain't broke, dont fix it."
  5. Filter socks?

My wifes nylons work very well especially when she is not in them. Stretch them a bit to find a good "capture/flow through rate". Beware of clogs that can happen very fast especially after maintenance causing an overflow.
  6. A nightmare with a moral then a question.

Thanks everyone. I am taking all the float valve advice to heart. Now is the time to reconsider some things. As soon as I clean up my fish room a little  I will pull out my camera and do a "re-build thread" in the members forum. Some people might like to see the back-side of my...
  7. A nightmare with a moral then a question.

I like it Ben, I like it. BTW I have never had a problem with my (Kent) float valves before. I have only replaced it once in 8 years, and that was about 2 years ago. The mis-functioning float valve was obviously bashed out of shape probably when I was manhandling the skimmer which is in...
  8. A nightmare with a moral then a question.

Thanks Lawdog and Chris (Cripes you guys have been at this site for a long time!!) I will keep half of my lr and add half new. See how it goes over time. In the process of turning a negative into a positive.
  9. A nightmare with a moral then a question.

To make a long sad story as short as possible, I came home from a vacation (Atlantis Bahamas = ironic). To my 150 gal aquarium nearly 100% fresh water. Everything dead except Hal the triggerfish whom I watched pass away before my eyes the next day. The tank-sitters (my kids) did everything...
  10. zooanthids

Thanks for your posts guys. I found a local who will take some of my zoo's to feed his moorish idol. The snails thing is a great idea and I'm pursuing it because I probably will never get rid of all the zoas by swapping out 1/2 the lr. Looks like a major tank reno coming up, but after a number...
  11. zooanthids

After 6 or 7 years, my zooanthids are taking over my aquarium and slowly squeezing out other corals. (I never bought them, they're hitch hikers on original live rock). The time is now to act. My lfs's have agreed to swap me new lr for my polyp infested ones. I figure I need to change out about...
  12. Whats your favorite?

My favorite overall is my scopas tang. He was one of the first fish I acquired 3 years ago and he is still fat and happy.
  13. Those with blue background in their aquariums ....

Light blue, dark blue, powder blue, black, whatever... I'm still trying to find a colour that will hide algae growth. The colour of my back wall is black and it looked great until 2 years worth of corraline algae buildup. Damn, I should have painted it yellow.
  14. Aqua Medic Turbo Flotor 1000 Multi Skimmer set up

I never worried much about the vial thing. The important thing is that the other end of the flex hose attaches to the pump creating the mixture of air/water that feeds to the skimmer. Adjustments are made with the black gate valves on the skimmer outlet tubes. It took me alot of tinkering over a...
  15. to spray or not to spray

Why not just paint your tank with Tremclad or similar? After fiddling with backgrounds and tape for years I eventually decided to paint my new sw tank. Result is way better IMO than paper or film.
