  1. Blackcap Basslet

I am pretty sure there are no mantis shrimp or pistol shrimp in the tank. The six line is fairly small but I guess it could do that kind of damage. I have had six lines with peppermints before and they did not do any harm to them. I wish I could have seen what did the attacking. I have not been...
  2. Blackcap Basslet

I brought home two med. to Lg Scarlet cleaner shrimp. The tank already had a large Black cap, a Bicolor Blenny, Yellow Tang and a Six-line wrasse. Shortly after introducing the cleaner shrimp I noticed that the largest one had its antennae greatly reduced and several legs missing. I never caught...
  3. cyano - need suggestions!!

I would agree with the previous post. I have been feeding this reef too much and usually every day. I am going to cut back on frequency and amount to see if that will not. I spent more than an hour harvesting Caulerpa today - not that it shows :(
  4. cyano - need suggestions!!

It has been 48 hours and now the lights are back on Reef. I don't see any cyano any more. See the attached.
  5. cyano - need suggestions!!

The lights have been out 2 days now and I'll turn them on in the AM to see how it has worked. Mr X Re: Vit C: I have used it for years. I have seen leathers with diseaseed spots clear up under this treatment. It is added to many of the frozen foods on the market; but if you are like me you...
  6. cyano - need suggestions!!

I usually get where I don't do many water changes; however, I have done 2 on this reef within the past month. Each time I vacuum the bottom. I am not getting much skimmate. One site said that while the ozonizer is being used there is usually less skimmate. I had to put a ball valve on the return...
  7. cyano - need suggestions!!

My 50 gal reef has been up a year. It recently developed cyanobacteria. It is Reef B on my blog http://mynewportreef.blogspot.com/ I was given an Ozonizer and injecting it into my DIY venturi protein skimmer. Shouldn't this help to ozidize the organic materials contributing to the growth of the...
  8. caraline algae

Alkalinity has been my answer after getting a starter from another reef. Also I use PowerSweeps(TM) for circulation. I take a flow director from tank that has corraline and put it on a Power Sweep of the new tank. See my reefs at http://mynewportreef.blogspot.com/
  9. My Newport Reef

My older reef is now two years old. I am a retiree with very limited funds but did not want to give up the hobby. But cannot afford any bells and whistles other than what came with the system when I received it as used two years ago. For many an RO/DI unit is not a "bell and whistle". Other...
  10. Rookie looking for some answers

http://mynewportreef.blogspot.com/ Here are some recent pics of my 2 reefs - with comments.
  11. does anything eat macroalgae?

I was thinking that my Yellow Tang was not having any effect on the Caulerpa but recently I have noticed much less of it on the front of the reef and even some diminish further back.
  12. Well, I've now got a problem

I like the garlic idea but In addition I would add some vitamin C: 100-150 mg/50 gal. system. When I had this problem a few years ago I bought a couple of Scarlet cleaner shrimp and put the UV on for a couple of weeks. Between them it seemed to get rid of the cysts and larval stages. I did not...
  13. Update on newportreefer's year old reef.

Ranger: My son lives in Aloha and we are both reefers. We usually shop at Waves or the Seahorse aquarium store in north Portland. For attitude and good deals I prefer the Seahorse. The large Capnella sp seen in my blog came from that store, The bad part is that it is clear across town so if my...
  14. Update on newportreefer's year old reef.

Ranger The tank belonged to my son. He had it special built. He always called it a 50 gal but after measurements it turns out to be closer to 40 gal. The sump/ refugium is a 20 gal long that is kept at around 3/4 full. It has an auto top-up to keep it constant.
  15. Update on newportreefer's year old reef.

The tang will nibble on it but does not eat enough to make any difference. I was just thinking of going in there and "harvesting" again but I am too lazy tonight. Besides I don't want to get too busy and miss Survivor lol.
