  1. Decisions....

i'd go with the RO/DI too. there are other means to maintain Ca and other elements in the tank.
  2. First experience with lights

flourescents, which is basically what PC is, does not suddenly die off like regular bulbs such as incandecents. the flourescents intensity will slowly disintegrate and an effective flourescent last only about 6 months. i'm talking about NOs here. PCs lifespan may be slightly longer, but still...
  3. 12K, 20K MH and Ultraviolet Radiation

do all glass shield against UV? or do it need special glass? what about acrylics? all acrylics?
  4. MH Vs HQI

ran a search in the web and it came out High Quartz Iodide
  5. MH Vs HQI

i doubt the acrylic can withstand the heat of the HQI. some commercial HQI bulbs are UV shielded, however coolest temp i have found out is only 5300k. not sure if those 10000k bulbs come shielded.
  6. MH Vs HQI

Hi guys, from my observation, i noted that normal MHs are single ended screw in types, whereas for MH-HQIs, which i will refer to as HQIs (which needs HQI ballasts), consists of screw-ins as well as double-ended, the latter being more common. please note that the above are only observations and...
  7. auto top off

i think dave is referring to the float switch, not the pump.
  8. MH Vs HQI

watt for watt, are double ended HQIs more intense than single ended MHs?
  9. Totally silent overflow setup?

cool, now we have a McFred standpipe for those using the durso, do you place the output of the durso above or below the waterline in the sump? i would assume if you place it below, there will be air bubbles since the durso sucks in air? or am i missing something?
  10. Totally silent overflow setup?

Thanks for the great ideas. think i'll hook up a Durso. kitta, your backup standpipe is a great idea. jrsdevi1, for unexplainable reasons, i simply prefer an intank overflow system
  11. Totally silent overflow setup?

yeah, i was thinking that it would be quite a difficult task, if at all possible. my idea was to stretch the durso's opening to just slightly below the top of the overflow so that that won't be a waterfall. was wondering if water entering the durso opening would create some kind of gurgling or...
  12. Totally silent overflow setup?

Was wondering if a totally silent setup with in-tank overflow, a sump below the main tank and perhaps a tall durso standpipe in the overflow is possible? i intend to have a setup in my room, but am afraid i would have problem sleeping . it won't be a large tank, should be in the region of 60G.

  14. NiteLight

thanks guys. what color light do you guys suggest? red or blue?
  15. NiteLight

just wondering. do any of you use any small bulbs or lighting to maintain some luminosity in your tanks at night. i figure some "moonlight" would be good?
