I have noticed a build up of a tuft- like green algae on a couple of rocks. The algae is short and soft, not filamentous. My LFS sold me some amino acid stuff for my corals, said it would kill the algae. He saw me coming. Any real ideas on what this stuff is and how I can control it?

I have a Red Sea Prism skimmer for my 55 gallon reef tank. It needs a part, which is on back order. How long can I go without a skimmer?
