  1. Purigen

Does anyone knows or have any experience with Seachem's Purigen - or what's exactly in there? Is it a product that can be used instead of activated carbon? Txs for any input.
  2. What in Neptune's World?

    Hydnophora sp.
  3. Lighting in Reef Tanks feature: Questions

I am not shocked, because I know several aquaria with low Alk and no problem at all. My 300 gal. is always around 2.2/2.3 Meq/L, and sometimes it goes a bit lower - and with a calcium reactor running. Growth of corals here is pretty good, despite that. So, we're talking the same thing. The only...
  4. Lighting in Reef Tanks feature: Questions

You surely did, Charles. I agree with all that. We are both talking the same thing but in differente senses. When the aquarist tries to resolve the problem that high PO4 levels cause to calcification of corals, just to say one of the deleterious factors of it, we cannot take in consideration...
  5. Lighting in Reef Tanks feature: Questions

I see, and agree. The problem of bleaching, in my point of view is always a consequence of an important change in some of the several parameters of the aquarium, as for example a boost in alkalinity, the continued manitenance of extremely high temperature or other distressing factor. Also agree...
  6. My clam spawned !

My only advice is: keep your eyes opened. Both eggs and sperm from clams are very toxic after dead. The condition in any aquarium is of a relatively small amount of water to deal with all the chemicals produced by the event of a clam spawning. I would suggest you to add a very good quality...
  7. External Pumps? The best, the worst, any experience

Little Giant 2 MD. Less noisy than the american Iwaki and incredibly long lasting.
  8. Can't keep mushrooms alive

Low water movement and light. That's almost all they need. The rest is - if you can keep corals, you can keep mushs. It's pretty easy. Take care only with the fact that they multiply very fast in good conditions, and can damage other corals by "rubbing" on them.
  9. mag, quiet one, little giant???

Little Giant. Less heat transferred to water, exceptional quality, no noise compared to plastic-made pumps. I have several of them working with minimun maitenance for years. One of them is an old timer 12 years old 3MD.
  10. Ocean Motion wave maker

I really don't know. J.P. retired and now (as I knew from three years ago) plants orchids.
  11. Unbalanced Ca/Alk usage

Try using kalkwasser slowly dripping at night only, in a way you can control the pH raise, that causes the Alk drop if too much CaOh is dosed.
  12. Unbalanced Ca/Alk usage

I'd use kalkwasser, if your need for Ca++ is so low. Seachem Calcium is a blend of things, and has a lot of calcium, but linked to other chemicals to make it have so much Ca++. Kalkwasser, in the other hand, has several advantages a.k.a. PO4 export from water - and used the right way, improves...
  13. Unbalanced Ca/Alk usage

Ca++ and Alk have a relation, but it is not so obvious. The animals do not have to consume them in a balanced (equal) condition. Anyway, your parameters are far from being bad. If you could just keep them as thy are, it's perfect. If it comes necessary to add more alk additive to keep it around...
  14. Yikes! My new six-line wrasse won't stop nipping at my clam

Does the fish nip the mantle, or under the clam ? If it's under the clam, or near the base of the mantle, it can probably be after clams parasites, a mollusc.
  15. Low pH - High alk - low Ca (please help Mr. Holmes-Farley)

You do not need to raise your pH. What you need is to avoid it to get above 8.5/8.6 pH, when the carbonate/bicarbonate systems starts to cause problems reducing alkalinity. Dosing calcium Hydroxide will raise your Ca++ levels, but, again, you do not need more than 380 ppm Ca++, and if you...
