Sounds like a crab or other predator. Same thing happened to me once. It turns out that a crab that started out the size of a dime turned into a monster and decided to sample the serpant star. Look for it when the lights go out.
Randy, I just made a post on reefcentral to the very same effect. A shoal of green chromis greatly improves the fish dynamic in any reef. While not my favorite fish, they certainly are a must have.
I see that no one has factored in upkeep costs. "Honey, those 3 metal halide bulbs, 4 VHO bulbs and that chiller doesn't add anything to the electric bill, honest." Or how about,"My RO/DI doesn't add to the water bill, honest."
I have a euro-reef and have been pleased with the results; nice foam. My prior skimmer was an ETS reef devil 3. Some people love the down drafts -- not me. The most reliable skimmer I ever had was a CPR backpack. Too bad it cannot handle a big tank. Just my opinion.
