It's also a good idea to put "egg crate" under the rock before you put your sand down. It will keep the rock stable and add a little security if you decide to move some rock and accidentally drop it.

Normally I only put in enough water to cover the top of my LR then add my sand, that keeps the water pretty clear. And it's easier to spread the sand.
