  1. Wrasse questions. Lighting questions.

Thanks for your help Len. After spending some time looking around and reading alot, I am wavering a bit on doing the harem of one species of wrasses idea. Instead, I was considering doing a variety of different fairy/flasher wrasses. My question is, if I stick with no more than one male per...
  2. Wrasse questions. Lighting questions.

I am considering a group of fairy wrasses for my new 185G reef. The most likely candidates are Scott's fairy wrasses (C. scottorum) or Solar fairy wrasses (C. solorensis). I have a few questions about these two fish. First, I know they are jumpers, what I am wondering, is how much clearance...
  3. New tank stocking question

Ok.. thanks for the advice. After doing a bit of research, I see that the Naso can get much larger than I thought (1'6" in aquariums?). Can anyone recommend a good site/listing/book with realistic minimum aquarium sizes? It seems like the listings on many of the e-tailer websites are way...
  4. New tank stocking question

I finally have my new 185G (60LX30Dx24H) set up, so I am starting to consider stocking. We kept a flame hawk, clarkii clown, and blue throat trigger from the old 75 and sold our rabbit and six-line back to the LFS for credit. With this tank, I'm not real sure how many fish it can resonably...
  5. Return pump sizing

What do you recommend for isolating them? Currently, I just have a piece of pre-filter insulation underneath all my pumps (return, refugium, chiller). It helps some, but not alot. Is there some other material which would be better suited? Thanks, Jason
  6. Return pump sizing

Its not an AGA, but it does have 1" bulkheads. So, with a Mag 12 running at 6 feet or so of head, with the T-s in it, should leave me with enough overhead to be fine? Are there any pumps which run quieter than the Mag 12, or are those pretty much the de-facto (submersible) return pumps?
  7. Return pump sizing

I have a recently set up 185Gal wide tank (60Lx30Wx24D). It has two corner overflows with dursos in it which are soft-plumbed to a sump. Because my LFS forgot to order a return pump for me (among other things...), we just used the Mag 9.5 off my old 75gal. The Mag 9.5 is then T-d off up to...
  8. cooling fans

Take a look at SilenX fans... they come in all sizes, are very quiet, and can push a decent amount of air. Their largest is 120x120x38mm does 90 CFM at 18dB. I have a few on my tank, and really like them. They also have a 4 fan AC controller (the fans themselves are DC).
  9. 60" Lighting Question

I just received my new 60Lx30Wx24D 185G tank/stand/etc etc. I originally purchased it with a Hamilton Prostar 3 Lighting System (3x 250 MH + 2x 96 Actinic). This is a 60" light, although it is really about 61" with the fans. The light is VERY bright, maybe even a little too bright for the...
  10. New Reef Tank Lighting Question

I just got back from a long chat with my LFS owner, and I think I've started to come to some decisions. I'm going with the 60Lx30Dx24H tank, the Hamilton light (3x250 MH, 2x96 CF Actinic). Sump, skimmer (not sure which yet), chiller, and a couple of new powerheads (not happy with the Rio's I...
  11. New Reef Tank Lighting Question

I'm in Austin, TX. I have looked at the option of building a hood, and it is still on the table as a possibility. Unfortunately, due to the floorplan of my house, we have a few less than ideal choices of a location for the tank. The choice we selected is against an angled halfwall for the...
  12. New Reef Tank Lighting Question

I'm in texas, so its hot, but I do have AC. I was pretty much planning on a chiller with any of these lighting systems (my current tank with egg-crate tops runs as high as 82 on bad days..). Anyone have any experience with Hamilton Lighting? They have this light - 5' PROTOSTAR 3 - 250 WATT...
  13. New Reef Tank Lighting Question

Are you referring to the Outer Orbit HQI? I cannot find an Orbit Extreme in 60" (and it looks like they are CF only). That fixture is 2x150 MH and 2x130 Actinic (560W total). Does that seem like enough light for the 60Lx30Dx24H? Is watts per gallon a useful way to measure, or is the type of...
  14. New Reef Tank Lighting Question

I currently have a 75 gallon (48"x18"x22") tank with a 4x65W lighting setup. I have been running this tank (my first) for about a year now, and am really enjoying the hobby. It's a reef with 6 fish, and a bunch of corals (mushrooms, zoa's, leathers, a brain, and a few others). Now that I feel...
