I've heard of Kalkwasser but only through books and forums. I could buy this from my lfs but they'd probably charge a lot becasue it's a "specialist marine product". I've never heard of pickling lime (bare in mind I'm in the UK, maybe it just has another name here?).
If I can get hold of it...
Been fighting a full on war for six months including tearing the tank down. Recently recruited two large peppermints (I think!) and been injecting visible ones, once a week with a version of Joes juice. However, I'm getting through a lot of this stuff and would like to keep the pressure up on...
A thought crossed my mind the other day... does anyone keep Octopus? I've never heard of it except in public aquaria but got me thinking why not? Of course crabs wouldn't be suitable tank mates and you'd need a small species but other than that I can't see a problem...oh except maybe for their...
What does it mean when Caulerpa "goes asexual" and what's the impact? I've got this mental image of a macho plant having an identity crisis and swanning around in a dress with badly applied lipstick!... oh actually that's transexual isn't it!

Returned from holiday to find my MH light had remained on all week! Tempreture was through the roof. Amazingly lots survived but my BTA had retracted into a cave. The next day I found it completely dead in a corner of the tank. However, the following day a smaller BTA emerged from the cave and...
I have a Fluval 404 canister filter which pumps back in through a 12" spray bar. This creates quite a strong down current at one end of the tank and anything directly below this would effectively be being blasted. I also have a couple of small interpet power heads. One fires slightly upwards so...
Advice appreciated please.
I've had my 55g corner setup for 8 months now. Went on holiday recently and lost a few bits but the rest seem settled now. I'd like to get some more corals but I'm not sure what to try. Most of what I have seems happier in the deeper, less turbulent areas of my tank...
That's not good news. I'm temporarily using a standard halide bulb meant for domestic use which I think is around 4000K. It's light is very very yellow and looks horrid. I've ordered a 10000K bulb and was rather hoping that would give me somthing nearer white light. Will this not be the case...
Thanks. I contacted the people I ordered the bulb from and they said it'd be ok but when I asked if the spectrum would be effected in any way they said "errrr .........no it'll be fine" which didn't inspire confidence. Just hope for the best I guess.
I've bought a Metal Halide unit off e-bay. Came with ballast unit but that has a big sticker on it saying Sodium Halide. Is this just a terminology issue or is there actually a difference?
Fingers crossed it's ok because I've just spent days customising my existing hood to accommodate it!
He's a juvenile yellow box fish (Ostracion cubicus) about the size of your thumb nail squared.
He's in a 40g corner tank with various mushrooms, polyp rocks, soft corals three gobies and a clown.
