Doh!!! It never occurred to me it might be an external pump. All of my pumps are submersible. So the buckett thing definately isn't a good idea. The inlet should be on the end with the impeller. Spring

I have my vhos come on early in the morning, first thing. Then a 175 w halide comes on about an hour later, then around 11:00 am the 250w halide comes on to simulate the High noon sun and stays on about 7 hours. They go off respectively the same way. Moonlites come on about an hour after lights...

He says he's not going to use the fireplace, so heat shouldn't be an issue. It is structurally being reinforced, so again, no problem. The only problem I see, is no place for a sump, if he decides he needs one. Other thatn that, I say go for it. Spring
