  1. Lighting help

Im planning a 150 gal. tenecor acrylic tank. I would like to use as much lighting as possible so that if I have the option of having more difficult corals in the future. I am concerened however with over heating and would like to avoid using a chiller at all costs. I was considering 3 x 175w...
  2. How hot does 1000W of VHO get?

Since I found out the canopy can be made 12" tall (as oppossed to 7") and drilled with vent holes for fans, can i do a MH retrofit? Will it still get too hot? I dont want to melt acrylic nor do i want to spring for a chiller. I was thinking something along the lines like: 72" 3x175W 6500K...
  3. How hot does 1000W of VHO get?

Thanks Len. Would you mind if I ask you 1 more thing? I have the option to order the 150 gal tank drilled w/ either 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch returns. (2 of them). Is it better to go with the larger? Also, I have the option of 1 or 2 one inch drains? Go with 2? I'm sure the size pump i get...
  4. How hot does 1000W of VHO get?

I can squeeze it into a 72 x 24 x 7 inch canopy but will it get too hot? Should I get it built 5 inches taller and with holes for fans and ventilation? The tank is an 150 gal acrylic 72 inches long. Thanks
  5. Let there be light!

    only 20" high
  6. Let there be light!

I know the canopy will be 7". I'm not sure about brace or braces. I would be ordering a tank from tenecor. Here is the link with a schematic of a smaller one. The one I will get is 72" long with the trapezoidal prefilter in the middle of the back. I believe it should look sorta like this...
  7. Let there be light!

And hopefully there will be with your help!!! I'm am considering purchasing a 150gal acrylic tank w/ stand and canopy. Anyway, I've been doing lots of research on retrofit lighting but I'm still undecided which way to go. This will be my first reef tank but I hope to one day have some great...
  8. In sump skimmer question

    Thanks all!
  9. In sump skimmer question

So it picks up water in the sump and puts it back after skimming it, back in the same place? Dosn't this reduce the effectiveness of it since it may be skimming water that has just been skimmed?
  10. In sump skimmer question

In an insump skimmer setup, does the return from the skimmer empty back into the same sump water that the intake line is in or does the return line connect directly to the pump for the tank return? If this is the case, won't the return pump suck the skimmer dry? Or is it better to have the...

  12. 'Nuther stoopid newbie question

Does anyone have links to specific resources that go into basic plumbing diagrams and equipment lists. I would like to now exactly everything I would need to hook up an 150g acrylic reef tank with protein skimmer, sump, heater, powerheads, air pumps, mechanical filters (prefilters if needed)...
  13. Newbie here... help!

Wannabereefer... Do you have any pics of your setup or links to a similar one so that I can get a closeup of how to do the plumbing? It would be a shame to throw in an whole grand for a "marine ready" tenecor tank if I can do better with a 10gallon fish tank as a sump and a protein skimmer...
  14. Newbie here... help!

With a top of the line protein skimmer, will I still need other mechanical filtration (i.e. prefilter which is built into the tank and external wet/dry unit)? Do you think I'll still have room in the stand for a sump large enough for this skimmer? Which size EuroReef is recommened? Questions...
  15. Newbie here... help!

Hey all... been trolling the forum for a few weeks now... great stuff! I'm really getting hooked on building a reef tank. I've had several freshwater tanks years ago but never saltwater. Anyway, I've been doing my reading and am getting psyched up! I'm looking to get a 150 tenecor acrylic...
