Can someone explain the best way to harvest the caulerpa. Do you just reach in and rip it out or should it be cut somewhere specific using a knife or something. I got some mexicana growing in an aquafuge 12 with miracle mud....should I let it grow to fill the refuge which is 12" high, or just...

Len, do you have any idea as to how long these non seeded DSB's have been successfully operating? I general, I'm curious as to experiences with respect to DSB longevity. Have there been any bad experiences with DSB's?

Thanks, Len. I noticed we posted at the same time. LOL! My main concern is that the DSB would lock up on me and I'd really like to minimize that possibility. I guess the risk is high without the detrivore kit. I'll look into the cost and practicality of of getting one to my area.

I'm hesitant about going with a DSB in my tank since I have no access to detrivore kits here in Canada. My concern is that the DSB will harden up. Has anyone gone with a Southdown DSB and not used detrivore kits? To be safe, would I be okay with 1-2" of Southdown...wouldn't I get some...

ky, I'm expecting the cyano on startup. Apparently, a higher flow rate in the sump is supposed to help with this as well as ensuring only fully cured live rock is added to the tank.

ky, I always wondered about the live rock instead of bioballs. Now I know where to add the live rock should I wish to do that. Thanks for that!

Danny, thanks. I will keep that in mind. What do you have for substrate in the main tank? James, I haven't seen ecosystem comment on DSB. Basically, they indicate that the substrate is decoration only and anything > ~ 3/8" can become a detritus trap and lead to algae problems in the main...

Hi Sue, can I ask how many pounds of mud you have in your sump? Any reason why you waited six months before adding the caulerpa...and when you did, was there any noticeable difference? The 180 looks fabulous, by the way.

kyguy, ecosystem recommends 600-800 gph on the 2410 filter and apparently it does work better with the higher flow rate. Is your sump an ecosystem sump?
