Saints Row 2 - PS3 Review

Picked up the game last friday, its not bad. Character customization is nice, game play is pretty good. Two things i dont like about it are the no aim helper so you have to adjust the joystick sensibility to your liking, seems too fast as default the other thing is if you speed pass an enemy on the screen and the red dot goes off the minimap even if you turn around as fast as possible they wont be there. Seems like it depopulates in a very short distance other then that its a good game so far. Cant wait for the multiplayer to go live with players!

On normal the game isnt very hard, bullets do not do alot of damage, I was getting blasted by 3 gang members and 2 cops and even with my off aiming I was able to take them all out before even getting a low health warning. So far I know you can swim, fly, drive (cars, trucks and motorcycles) and boat for transportation as well as shoot from every vehicle.

"Forgive and forget" stations wipe out ALL your enemies hatred towards you even if they are right on top of you so there is no reason to lose them, the more hatred you have, the more it costs. One thing I really like is that random fights happen between rival gangs or cops and gangs and you can watch, get involved or walk away the hatred doesnt switched to you once one side is down you can also cheer them on or boo them, booing will get you hatred and they will attack (booing = giving the finger).

ALOT of "mini games" to do around the city which earns you respect and money. You need respect to do missions and after each mission you gain territory which earns you weekly money and that area full of your gang members which will help you if ANYONE attacks you.

To me this game is an easier GTA (besides targeting) but its good not as detailed but good. This is EXTREMELY NOT KID FRIENDLY, within the first 3 mins there were sex, drugs, killings and profanity.

How are the graphics? And vehicle control?

Graphics are good, alot of detail in the cityscape, Characters dont look quite as smooth as GTA 4 but still good, vehicle damage is terrible when you damage some vehicles it looks more like wrinkled paper then damage to metal and (not that it really matters) peel outs and drifting leave no tire marks. Shadowing is OK, Weather system so far is weird, you'll hear thunder but no rain, Clear sky and rain. I think these are due to the amount of content in the game or they just rushed it out or maybe even just a glitch. Weapons are pretty good, you can dual wield, and each weapon class has a few different models so you will get alot of "Press X to swap Raptor Shotgun with X-12 shoutgun" type of thing. Melee weapons include pepper spray and taser along with the basic bat, knife and swords. ANother few thing i like about the fighting system is the ability to use a human shield, throw people and pretty much pick up anything in the world and either throw it or swing with it including pulling traffic signs and fire hydrants out of the ground (rediculous? yes, but fun!).

Driving is very tight unlike GTA 4. Hit the handbrake and you stop fast with out losing control, steering is very tight also. I like driving in this game much more then GTA 4 much easier to control although unrealistic its better. You can peel out but Im not sure what it really does, you hold the handbrake, press X and let go the whole screen shakes as if a boost but doesnt seem to go any faster than a normal start. You can also choose to steer by tilting the control or using the joystick.

Sound is unimpressive, all cars sound the same, gun fire doesnt really sound right to me. Music seems VERY repetative, though all real songs it just seems like when i turn to each station 50% of the time its the same song, you can buy songs at the record shop (in game shop using in game money) and create your own station which is better but not very many music choices within each catagory, I havent played too long so maybe new songs open up further down the line.

Im sorry I keep comparing it to GTA 4 but it is very similar game play.

Are the missions time sensitive like on GTA?

Kinda is, stuff ive seen so far is "Keep away from the paparazzi for 2 mins while your passenger gets "serviced". Which requires you to drive fast and zig zag keep the evidence meter down and the pleasure meter up. Another one I saw was to devalue properties while driving a septic truck (i think you know whats done here.) but you dont control the vehicle you just spray.

Its alot of "hit this goal in a certain amount of time" as oppsed to do this, that and this in 5 mins.

Keeping the celebrity safe quests are alot of fun, when they charge him/her you literally toss them and depending on what you toss them at it will give you a bonus my faves are throwing them at cops as they just blow holes through him, throw them at a bulldozer and shovel lands on top of them, throw to construction workers and they jack hammer them through the stomach. Lot of fun!
