Hi Paul ;-)
Happy veterans day. It is in fact important for younger generations such as mine and younger to know, understand and learn or history could repeat its less good or bad moments, and it also helps to better judge the present life we have and to improve where needed for a better world. One of the ways to do it is showing how it was and this you or someone did one day by posting this 1/77th Artillery Vietnam Photos

All I can say is that I served in the 6th of cavalry during a blessing peace time.

Cheers
Pedro Nuno ;-)

I don't know? Maybe it's just me, but saying "Happy Veteran's Day" doesn't feel right. I think Thank You are the words everyone should be saying.

Pedro, thanks, I was in the 1st Cav as I can see you found some pictures of me.

Maybe it's just me, but saying "Happy Veteran's Day" doesn't feel right. I think Thank You are the words everyone should be saying.

Timber I was thinking that myself today also. I really don't know what the proper greeting or response is on Veterans Day. I do get a lot of "Thank Yous"
and I also thank any Veterans and active duty people I see. Veterans usually say "welcome home" to each other. Viet Nam Vets anyway.
I am going to try to get to the Veterans Day Parade here in Manhattan today. I am retired now but when I worked in the city, I always went to see it. I also wear my Army shirt today which unfortunately is falling apart.
But "thank you" is a good response. Of course we should think about all the thousands of good people that did not make it home.
I am always sad to see one of those pictures on that site Pedro posted.
The bottom center photo with me and a friend of mine was the FDC (Fire Direction Control) on a small firebase called Illingsworth. A few days before that picture was taken about 79 of us were attached by 400 NVA and that FDC was hit by a rocket and collapsed. All 7 guys diden't make it out. So Veterans Day is really "Rememberance Day" and there are so many familys who lost Sons to wars.
So my Joy of seeing Veterans marching down fifth Ave. is always tempered by the thought of all who can't be there.
Welcome Home to all you Veterans and future Veterans

It's strange and saddening how Veteran's Day gets less and less recognition every year - I grew up in New Hyde Park and they used to have a Veteran's Day parade down Jericho Turnpike by the town hall and I haven't heard anything about that, but then again I don't live there anymore...

I live in new Hyde Park and there was maybe 7 Veterans at the town hall this morning. No more parades. There is no draft so no one sees any soldiers except on page 48 of the News after Paris Hilton.
Unfortunately the younger generation has no Idea why America is America and what it could have been if it were not for American Veterans.
How different the world would have been if it not for American Veterans. There would be no England, France, Italy or Poland. We as Americans would be speaking Japanese or German. There would also be no Jewish people.

Thank you to all who have served to protect the freedoms and the way of life I have. I can never repay that debt to you but my appreciation is more than anything you can imagine.

Speaking of Veterans, I just this minute came back from the VA Hospital we have here on Long Island. It is a huge place, mainly a hospital for Veterans.
Last week I registered for benefits. I have health insurance but they give me prescriptions cheaper and for some reason if I ever need them I can go there for free.
I just went for a physical and a flu shot.

I may as well use some of the benefits.

My step dad just went to the VA hospital for the first time as well. There turned out to be a huge number of benefits for him to take advantage of as well as medical information specific to vets that he was unaware of. For instance, exposure to agent orange has been linked to diabetes.
