This is me just in a bad mood but I want to inform the entire MR community how important it is to spay and neuter your dogs.

The health benefits are one thing but for anyone on this site that owns a pitbull/Presa Canaria/Cane Corso or other potential aggressive breeds PLEASE have them spayed or neutered.

This summer has been a horrible few months for dog fights and the truth is if your animal is not spayed/neutered it is a target for another unaltered animal.

This is not meant to be a forum where everyone starts to argue with me about the topic I just have to write this since I know many of you own pit bulls and other dogs.

I love pit bulls and foster them and am a huge advocate for the breed so do not take this in a manner I dont care for them.

EVERY SINGLE DOG FIGHT I have seen this summer involved an unaltered male dog (all breeds) so please neuter and spay.

FYI its free at the humane society for any pit bull!!!!!!!!

sorry to rant but I just had to put an amazing dog to sleep because it was so brutaly attacked that the cops had to come and get the dogs off of this poor dog

The problem with a lot of people that own pits is that they want to keep breeding them, without realizing how many dogs sit in shelters everyday waiting for a home :(.

I had a friend who's neighbor had the most gorgeous male pit, but he absolutely REFUSED to neuter him. For one, he didn't want to make him "less of a man" (I tried explaining anthropomorphism to him, but...he didn't really get that the dog wouldn't feel self concious about his lack of testicals). He also wanted to sell the puppies (for fighting). Meanwhile, every week I was bringing my friend food samples from the pet stores I worked for because the owner couldn't even afford to keep the dog. :sigh: While I was working in these stores (in Brooklyn), I also came across a lot of people who had very over muscular dogs; they would buy them the most protien rich food and literally force feed it to them to increase mass. The poor things were obviously in fights, but the owners always denied it. I tried to go about reporting them, but nothing ever came of it, unfortunately :(.

Cats too! I've seen too many boxes of abandoned kittens.

Bumping this for anyone considering getting a dog or cat anytime soon- visit your local ASPCA/animal shelter instead of buying.

It won't help because these people are irresponsible to begin with. Most serious maulings and attacks I read is because the owners just let them free to roam and not properly confined to their property. I rarely hear of attacks when the owner is walking their dog down the street but I guess those are not serious enough to make it in the paper or websites.

Over 90% of the dog attacks we see at our 3 hospitals involve intact males not cause of hormones although that contributes its the male showing dominance and when he sees another intact male its alpha against alpha or simply one trying to show he is alpha.

As for attacks on leash you would be surprised how often that happens.

I didn't post this thread to really get into any discussions although always love to, simply just a reminder cause I know lots of us are dog owners.
