I ost my olympus 400 zoom due to the housing flooding when I was away diving and have been trying to decide on a new camera. I have narrowed it down to these two.

What do you think, which one is better?

Kind of ironic there... hope it wasn't too bad, flood damage can be painful to clean up.

Those are both really nice cameras; at that price point though, have you considered a DSLR like the Canon Digital Rebel?

Thanks I am going to send the Olympus 4000 z in for repair but who knows. Atleast it was in fresh water (Ginnie Springs)!

Canon G5 Price: $ 644.95

Mfr. Mail-In Rebate: $ 20.00
Price After Rebate: $ 624.95
Shipping Cost >

PowerShot G5, 5.0 Megapixel, 4x Optical/4x Digital Zoom, Advanced Point-and-shoot, Digital Camera with Lexar 512MB 40x CompactFlash Card

Nikon 5700 Price: $ 739.95

Mfr. Mail-In Rebate: $ 150.00
Price After Rebate: $ 589.95
Shipping Cost >
Buy it Used $549.00 >

Coolpix 5700, 5.0 Megapixel, 8x Optical/4x Digital Zoom, SLR, Digital Camera

So they are both 5. megapixel but the canon comes with a huge memory card. While the Nikon has a 8x optical zoom.

Whats the difference between a DSLR and a point and shoot?

Thanks

The cheapest I could find the digital rebel was $899 and I don't think I can convince my wife on that one! Unless my backup reg set sells on ebay! hmmmm

Wow the price on the Nikon has come way down since I last looked at it.

A DSLR has interchangeable lenses and feels more like a traditional 35mm "serious" camera, but yeah there is a bit of a gap there with the prices you are finding. The ones you are looking at are smaller and more self-contained, which is an advantage, a fancy camera doesn't do you any good if it isn't at hand when you have a photo op.

Thanks for the help!

We actually only dove Ginnie Springs cavern it self. We didnt do devils eye/ear at all. It was a stop on the way back from the keys as they had some bad winds and we only got limited diving in there. The water at the springs is amazing though, so clear!

Here is one of the last pictures I took before the housing flooded. The entrance to the cavern is on the right.

I would definately go with the Canon G5. I work at the Mobile Register newspaper and a lot of the sports reporters use that camera. It is a very nice camera. Neither are a DSLR, they are called ZSLR or Zoom Single Lens Reflex. The DSLR have interchangeable leses such as the Canon Rebel 300D or the Canon 10D.

Hope that helps...

LOTS of digital cameras (especially Nikons and Canons) have lenses available. I went for my Oly C-740 because it's one of TWO that has a full 10x OPTICAL zoom. Also like it a lot because it has many manual settings, as well as being a very decent point&shoot unit.

The Canons are quite popular, and likely for a reason. Have you already priced u/w housings for them?

If you haven't already, then I strongly suggest going to

I spent MONTHS researching my purchase. Most of my regrets have to do with not having the funds to get what I would have really liked, but I am positive that I got the best camera for me for the best price around.

I have had a chance to use both cameras. The Canon is big and clunky feeling. The Nikon has a nice feel. The canon is much easier to use. The Nikon seemed to take better photo's when you set White Balance on it. For the price, since they have come down so much, I would lean more towards the Nikon. dpreview is a killer source, they break things down great.

I jumped the gun and bought the Nikon 8700. I don't really like it now that I have had a few weeks to play with it. I am going to resell it on ebay and pick up a Nikon D70 set. I don't like the tiny feel of the 8700 of the confusing menus. To be honest I am not even that impressed with the photo quality.

Thanks
