getting pods from sump to main tank?

Hi Everyone,

I am totally prepared to be laughed at on this one:splitspin

All the literature says that a healthy, full of pods sump is a bonus as it provides nutrition for the fish. Are these pods supposed to make their way to the main tank? How? My pump has a filter....

Take a good look in the tank they should be there too already. If you are that concerned with getting them into the main tank you can take a piece of sponge filter or chateo and put it in the sump. Give it a couple days and it should be packed full of them. Then just shake it out in the main tank.
You don't have anything that eats them in the tank do you?

mine made their way from the sump to the main take all on their own. I actually was asking myself the same question as you one day. I took a REAL good look at the base of my LR where it meets the sand and saw a butt load of pods running around.

if you don't have a nice bundle of cheato, you can always use a brand new and cleaned (no detergents, etc) plastic cleaning pad you know like the ones you use to get the gunk off pots and pans. Make sure it is the cheapest kind, without the mold resistant stuff. you put them in the sump, let it get populated by pods, then put it in your tank
Or you can get a 54micron sieve, and scoop them.
At night when there is no light, turn on a flashlight and put it by the glass, you will see the pods coming to the light, especially if you turn off the pump for a lil while. You'll be surprised of how many are there

I second the thought of getting rid of the pump filter. You're just going to create a nitrate factory anyhow. Let the little suckers take the express elevator.

These critters are unstopable just remove the filter from the return and it only takes a few to poulate a tank in a few months and I am shore that there is already a strong population in your main tank. Try puting piece of seaweed somewhere at the bottom of the tank after lights out and the room is in complete darkness, give it a few hours then check where the seaweed was placed with a flashlite and if they are in your main thank they will be there. I have seen this worked in my thank and the shrimps don't eat/gobble it up before the little critters come out.

OK, I will take the filter out of the pump. I do have them in the main tank, but I have lots more and bigger ones in the sump

leslie i know i'm not answering your original question but you can also add a HOB fuge if you have space behind the tank. i prefer this method for pod cultivation. sparky had a good idea, that works also. but i would prefer using a very porous rock instead of a sponge or cheato.

Contrary to what you want - it is best to have more pods in your fuge than in your tank - what happens is a balancing act -

Pod population is "said" to reach a natural maximum on its own - that being said, if your tank reaches this point, and you have something in there that eats them, you can have them rejuvinated by the sump and always be in a cycle that supports reaching the full point, some getting eaten and them regenerating - this is a healthy system IMHO

So, main point is you should always want more in the fuge than display -

Pod population is "said" to reach a natural maximum on its own - that being said, if your tank reaches this point, and you have something in there that eats them, you can have them rejuvinated by the sump and always be in a cycle that supports reaching the full point, some getting eaten and them regenerating - this is a healthy system IMHO

So, main point is you should always want more in the fuge than display -

When I had my sump/fuge set up on my 75gl the pods would shoot into the tank. My tomato clown was always in the direct flow of the return tubes. He was one smart motha. As soon as a pod shot out he would chase it down. I still dont know how they made it through the impeller.

Open up a powerhead and you can find out how and why. Most of the impellers are not structured to chop up things that are small enough to get inside the space between the flangs. The pods may end up dizzy though:groupflip :biggrinpa :groupflip

Fresh live food is usually considered good food. Furthermore, usually a fuge will provide more than one type of pods and thus filling the gap of the food chain better than, let say, just one brand of pellets along.

Every once in a while I listen to POD in the living room but the fish don't seem into it but when I get some Metallica goin or even some Clapton I tell you the fish start groovin!. Maybe you should try tha............. Oh you mean pods sorry, I'll go back to doing what I was doing then.

Believe me your six line is interested in pods. A 6 line will eat every last pod in a tank in under 5 minutes. As far as pods go a 6 line is a great white shark times 10.

I can't find the link but there was a study done, essentially circulating a ton of pods through a pump to see how badly a trip though the pump would damage them. the answer was NOT AT ALL. Sending them "on the express elevator" does nothing to them, except place them in an environment full of predators.
