I have an AGA 75 gallon RR. I purchased the overflow kit from AGA. My question is, if I want to do hard plumbing down to the sump and as the return, should I use the bulkhead fittings that came with the overflow kit and have the end for hoses? Or, should I buy two new bulkheads that can have pvc cemented right to it? Also, should the overflow down into the sump have 1" PVC and the return have 3/4" PVC?

Thanks for your help!

John,

If you're looking for a quick fix Home Depot sells fittings that go from hose to PVC.

Then you can attach a small piece of hose from the bulkhead and PVC.

If your not in a rush, I would buy the slip fitting bulkheads and glue everything. Remember if you ever have to move the tank your going to have to cut the pipe at the bulkhead and get new bulkheads.

Steven, that pic is for a pvc to actual hose connection. I think bigsink was probably referring to pvc to vinyl tubing (I might be wrong), but I've never seen anyone plumb a tank using garden hose. It won't be safe. Most garden hoses have brass connections. Saltwater and brass is not a good combination. I think he meant a barbed fitting.

I would get two new bulkheads. The ones that come with the AGA kit are a bit cheap. Get some sch 80 bulkheads and you dont have to worry.

No doubt in my mind. Schedule 80 bulkheads are great. Just have to be careful when buying Sch 80 on a predrilled AGA. What they do is drill the tank, then they temper the glass. So you can't enlarge the hole.

Aga tanks up to 120 (at least if I am not mistaken) are definately drilled for Schedule 40 with 1" drains and 3/4" returns - if you buy new ones, they'll likely be exactly the same as the ones that came with the overflow kit.

I would recommend you use the ones that came with it - you won't be able to redrill since the glass is tempered as mentioned before and make sure you hand tighten with a 1/8 turn with pliers or adjustable wrench - any more than that and you'll split the nut - they are very fragile.

Russ,

That's a PVC to vinyl fitting. Maybe I copied the wrong pic. The ones I used on my tank are grey and the barbed part is a little longer. I had to use it because the durso was glued into the bulkhead and I didn't want to have to put together a whole new one. Which now that I think about would not have been that hard. But I'm sure back then it was:splitspin .
