Well for my first post, i need an answer to a question that probally has come up before but i could't find any info. So This is what i'm working with: A 30 gallon Oceanic cube : 250 MH : Remora : ZooMed212 : Stealth 100w heater. Now the question...... I also have a Eheim 2028 canister Which a LFS told me to use on my reef. He also said to put the noodles and live rock and carbon inside. Is this right? I just want to have enough filtration with no problems in the future. PLEASE HELP

Thanks
,Jesse

I don't know what noodles are, but I used a canister filter for a while on my tank, as long as its cleaned very regularly there really is no problem.

I used mine primarily for carbon/

I would only use it for carbon or the like. You could run it with no media just for the circulation since you have it.

 But What about putting live rock rubble inside the filters chamber? Which the lfs said to do. I never heard of such a thing.

Some people do it

I wouldn't know how to go about cleaning it with LR in it. It would act like a very small sump then.

Where are you in the Garden State? I am way down south....

You can if you like. If you have LR in your tank I do not think the small volume in the canister filter will make much difference.

If you have live rock and strong circulation in the main tank + your Remora skimmer I would not bother with the canister filter. You have plenty of filtration as is and the canister filter will be a maintenance headache IMO. If it's not cleaned regularly it will do more harm than good IME.

I have a large one that I use...Penn Plax cascade 1500 I think (been a while). There is no media in it. I do not have any LR in it either...I am using it basically to increase water flow and water volume (holds appx 1.5 gallons)...and the outlet is a few inches from a small hang on "refugium" I have that contains cheato.
So in essence, it more or less blows through this refugium.

Since I took out the media from the canister, and added the hang on refug, nitrates took a huge nosedive. No protein skimmer here, so it seems to be working as needed.

I clean it every 2 months-a quick rinse out.

The problem I have with my Eheim is that the slots in the media baskets are too big. Which forces me to put carbon in a pouch. Which, in turn, causes the pouch to pick up detritus over time.

I use it because the tank is still just getting started, but once I've stopped needing the carbon, I'll probably remove the canister altogether.

I also have a wet/dry hang on tha I use. I like it for the way it creates surface "waves" and helps with the gas exchange at the surface.
I periodically use the media-mostly during water changes to "trap" anything that gets stirred up...or any other time I am expecting a lot of crap floating (blowing off the rocks, vacuuming the cc, moving things around etc...) I also use it to put carbon in, and as well, those "pads" that remove phosphates etc...
