algea problem

hi all
i have recently upgraded from a 55 gallon to a 90 gallon. in the process i added 30 more lbs of live rock and a new light set up. the old light set up was a power compact with 4x 65 the new is a nova extreme 8x54 t5 setup with a 660 ballast.

im wondering if this infact cyano?
what are some options of getting rid of it?
i need to get a phosphate test but all other numbers are as follow
ammonia <.15
nitrite 0
nitrate 0
calcium 400

Hi Hndakd and :welcome:

It looks like cyano. Possibly some dinos too. Either way, the solution is the same - aggressive circulation and nutrient control (ie. pure source water, good skimmer, water changes, no overfeeding, etc.). It will also take some time and patience.

Do you have a good skimmer on the tank?
Are you seeing this stuff on all the rock or just the new stuff?

yea i have a skimmer its bulked into a pro 75 wetdry
its all over the place in the tank. not only on new stuff but old and all over the sand. I have been told by a local shop guy to not do to much to the tank and let it settle. I did a water change last week and saw no improvement it actually got worse

What are you using for source water (ie. straight from the tap, RO, RO/DI, etc.)?

never had a problem with the other tank. i picked up a uv sterilizer today aswell. cant remember the brand of it.

Tap water is more than likely a great source of phosphates and/or silicates for you. Try using RO/DI water or water from those glacier machines and you should definitely see improvement.

Buy a phosphate kit and test your tap water. Also, use the kits that you already have and test it on the tap water.
