I'm a long time hobbiest (15+ years), but fairly new to salt. I moved a little over a year ago and am dying to set up my 125gal tank in a reef configuration. I've been reading forums like this one for years and think I'm ready to build my skimmer. I think I've just about got my design pegged considering counter current flow, capacity, bubble micron size etc...etc... But before I go forward with my plans I was wondering if I have been exhaustive in my planning. Does anyone have any favorite DIY sites for a protein skimmer plans etc.? All My google searches turn up the regular fare and I was hoping to do one more push for info before taking the plunge!

Hi Josh and :welcome:

Needlewheel/meshwheel skimmers - particularly the recirculating models seem to be the most popular these days. You might want to consider that option too.

I voted venturi because I have a DIY airstone skimmer due to noise issues. The venturi is more consistant on a long term basis. I am already disliking the maintanance of replacing the airstones. It is just one more monthly expense and chore to take care of. I do however, like how quiet my skimmer is two feet away from my computer desk as I type this.

I make my own basswood stones to use in my DIY skimmers.
They are 2"X2" by 5 to 7 inches long, and have a 7/8ths dia bore.
