I currently have a 125 display with a 29 gallon sump/fuge. I'm using an Aqua C Remora pro HOB skimmer in my sump.

I'm going to convert a 90 gallon breeder into a sump/fuge. I have to get out from under the stand.

I'm looking for a new skimmer for this system.

Any preferences to Euro-Reef 180 vs Acua-C EV 400? Or do you guys prefer another brand? Looking at anything under $600 rated for a system like this.

I've read quite a few threads and visited a few sites and understand that skimmer threads get quite repetitive but I want to get this right the first time and not end lookin for another one 3 months from now 8O .

What would you get in this price range for this system?

Thanks in advance

The EV-240 is what I own. I have no idea how Aqua C skimmers compare to Euro-Reef, but mine seems to do a pretty good job with my 75. It's pretty easy to use once you get used to it too.

I haven't had experience with either of those. But, I do know that a LFS in Topeka, KS (used to live near there) had a AquaC Remora on their 125gal display with a 55gal sump/fuge. The tank looked very good and the owner new what he was doing.

well, an aqua c remora is rated for tanks up to 75 gallons, and i assure you, that is a bit over-rated. i'm not convinced that the owner knew what he was doing.

Jim, there's no hang-on skimmer currently available that I would put on the system you are planning.

Out of those two I'd definitely take the Euro-Reef. Personally I'd spend the few extra bucks and get the 250 model. Others I'd consider in that price range would be the ATI Bubblemaster 200 or DAS EX-2. Either should outperform the ER or the AquaC.

For a budget skimmer the Octopus line is tough to beat for the $$$, but to a certain extent, you get what you pay for (the included pumps are cheap crap IME). Something like the DNW-200 (recirc model) would work well. Also, an ASM (G4, G4+, etc.) would work and be relatively cheap.

FWIW, I'm currently experimenting with a modified Octopus NW-200 on my 180 FOWLR and it's skimming great - serious bang for the buck (w/the mods). Just not sure how long the crappy pump will last, however...

Sorry about the mix-up. I always get confused with the AquaC skimmers (H.O.B. or in-sump?). The LFS had the AquaC Urchin Pro. That tank also had a low bioload, with only three Clowns, a mandarin goby, and about 15 types of soft corals. (which none of this is relevant to this thread, I guess)

Anyway, sorry about any confusion.

The euro-reef RS line is real good. I used a RS80 on my old 60 cube and use a RS250 on my current 150. A RS180 would do fine for you, but the 250 would give you a little extra. I think ASM significantly over rates there skimmers. When you compare the ER to ASM similar sized body skimmer there rating is almost twice that of ER.

i was under the impression that euro-reef and asm uses the same pumps anyway. i was also under the impression that the only difference was the thickness of the acrylic. so this G4X i have is only rated for 225 gallons by euro-reefs standards? that would make a skimmer for my system 5 feet tall and as round as a telephone pole 8O

Thanks for the help guys.

Lookin at the ATI 200 and ER 250.

Planning on making the move Thanksgiving weekend.

Gotta put the baffles in the 90 and get some more buckets for the move. Have some research time in between.

One of these days I'll get around to posting pics.
