Hello all!

I have been keeping tropical fish for about 7 years now and really want to move in another direction - namely reef setups.

I am a student and part time worker so as you can imagine my funds are limited. As such I was looking for a way to be economic and came across 'miracle mud.' Do you know if this can be used to fuel a 10 or 15 gallon tank and if anything else apart from lighting is required? I presume that because it is for a small tank the sump could even be disproportionately large to keep the main tank as good for the creatures as possible?

I am only looking to look after anemones and live rock and perhaps a clown eventually.

Any advice would be really appreciated!

Thank you for your time,

Tetradon

:welcome:

There was a test done on miracle mud in the past- essentially it showed that Miracle mud was mostly silicone- or sand.

Most nano tanks rely on live rock and water changes for their filtration. If you get about 1-1.5 lbs/gallon of live rock, good flow, and do weekly to bi weekly water changes, you should have a fairly stable system that you could keep 1 or two clowns in. If you want anemones you will need to add good lighting, which may or may not contribute its own dilemmas (high costs, heat, etc.).

Go slow and do your research!

Hi Cindre2000!

Thank you very much for your info, it is really good. Will indeed take it slow - I am just gathering info at the moment. Will not be setting it up for a while yet. Find all this marine, reef and nano tank business quite confusing currently. Only over the past few months has it really dawned on me it is not just tropical and marine but indeed many variants of each and all with slightly different requirements.

Thank you for a nice welcome, great site!

i bought miracle mud, and found pieces of brick in it, and also what appeared to be glass particles. it's a scam.
it's probably right from someone's backyard.
