if you had a shallow sand bed and plenty of sand critters to keep the turnover high, then i don't really see why you need to get new sand. maybe just wash it a bit in saltwater before putting it into the new tank? someone else want to chime in?

I've had quite a few tanks thru the years with deep sand beds and shallow and without. The main thing with a SSB is not to let it collect detrius and become a nutrient sink as SSB's don't process waste like a DSB. If your sand bed is fairly clean , I would surely go ahead and use the sand for the new tank.As it was said above , might wanna give it a quick rinse in saltwater beforehand , you will be surprised at how dirty it really is.
