i am getting my 50g drilled, i don't fully understand the need for overflow boxs' in/external. are they necessary, what do they do.
would it not be wise to just have the two holes on the top back wall of the tank one with a strainer and one for the return. or get the bottom of the tank drilled and have it set up kinda like this

I believe that you have the bottoms drilled so that you can have the pipes going under the tank and you dont need anything hanging off the back of the tank. The only thing on the back of my tank are the wires for the lighting and power heads.

You would want to skim as much surface water area as possible. Just using the drilled hole will work, but the water surface area you are skimming is limited. This is why you want an internal overflow box. Most of the Dissolved Organic Compounds are on the surface of the water. IMO

I have one of them on my tank already, but i am having a flushing sound problem but i now know what the problem is... Those things work well. I have to reconfigure my hoses for my drains, they are flexible, i think i might goto hard pipe. Air is apparently getting stuck inside the waves in the hoses causing suction.

Hmm not sure a Durso can go outside the tank. And yes the tank will only fill up to the holes that are drilled, but like someone said before it will only skim teh width of the hole, with a box it will skim much more surface area, since the box is open at the top on two sides.

Why not try an external overflow box? Save yourself a ton of room in the tank, and you still get the surface skimming power of an internal box.

Just an idea..i have pics if you need them.

And yes you can have an external durso, have pics of that too. And you can just create a box around the hole if you have already drilled it. I have pics of that too.
