was just wondering on making new overflow boxes for my tank. it wasnt getting enough with the teeth so they were cut off on the front of the old box. what if i didnt use any teeth? so basically a baffle leading to the drain. any input would be appreciated. thanks

You can still safely have no teeth......
I siliconed gutter guard to my no teeth overflow.
I then sliconed on a finishing strip of black plexi.
I formed to fit with the aid of a heat gun.
NEVER had a mishap! :wink1:

i was thinking of using a piece of egg crate. i should've mentioned that in my first post. i thought only eels travel with water flow? i didnt see it to be a problem than other fish would be sooo "smart'" enough to try to pass through a 1 inch "trap"

I have no teeth on my overflow and only had a problem in the beginning. Once a fish goes over they seem to never do it again. I'm not sure teeth will prevent that from happening. Even with teeth I'm sure fish find a way over if they want to. Other's can verify if they have had any fish go over the overflow even though they have teeth. If flow is an issue you can try to widen the space between the teeth.

ok. something has to be put into the over flows. but is there a reason other than keeping the fish etc. out of the sump? would a straight cut overflow still have the same surface skimming power as one with teeth? i would think more. but the teeth would force water into the spaces might cause more aggitation. by the way thanks to everyone for their input.
