great site, been lots of help so i am once again relying on the kindeness of strangers. background: been doing freshwater and africans for 20 years but never saltwater. recently a neighbor got ripped off by a lfs; he went in with no aquarium knowledge and a platinum credit card and they sold him everything. not realizing the matinece involved most evrything died. long story short he gave me evrything he had. a 40 gallon fowlr. now to my questions. tank has few crabs and snails, brittlefish, and simple damsels.
it doesnt have a ps, do i need one, and whats a good basic one?

using insant ocean salt what additives do i need; here is a long list of what he gave me all unopened
Kent marine tech cb buffer part a and b
seachem reef carbonate
" marine buffer
" reef iodide
" reef complete
" reef builder
" reef calcium
Esv b-ionic calcium buffer system 1and 2
Esv potassium iodide
esv strontium chloride
Amquel plus
Nova aqua
Kh test kit( other tests i am used to doing with fresh water)
red slime remover( i dont have red slime anymore but should i use it as a prevetive)
tank has been running in my houese for two monthes and i hace lost afew fish but seems stabilized now. all help is appreciated

damn the Local fish store took that guy for a ride! All those chemicals for 40 fowlr? Which store is it, we should publicly shame them.

As for yourself, If you just doing a fowlr, stick to the basics 10% water changes weekly (+or- depending on bioload), rodi water, a good skimmer and water flow, You didnt mention live rock and sand, but that will definitly be necessary. ALl the other chemicals are not gonna be neccessary for a while.

good luck

Alot of these additives are the same under different names or have the same stuff in it. If you ad parts A and B, Reef builder, Marine Buffer, and reef calcium buffer system esv bionic You are going to throw your systems Calcium and alkalinity out of whack causing huge problems and lots of death and red slime. Never use amquel it's not good in a reef tank. Nova Aqua isn't good to use in a reef tnk.

Pretty much less is more in a reef tank.

I would also test your phosphates that may be the cause of your slime problem. Are you using tapwater? That could be a contributor to phosphates and other chemicals and total dissolved solids being added to your tank and causing a lot of your problems too.

Chief, Chief, Chief..he specifically said he didn't have red slime..just that the guy gave him the red slime remover along with all the rest of the stuff. He asked if he should use it as a preventative...btw, the answer to that is

NO! :)
You are usually way more on top of these things! Do I need to say RIF?...

Sorry my bad, no preventative usage of the RSR, proper husbandry and good water quality are the best prevention methods for red slime

The rough ratio of sand to tank is: 1lb sand: 1gal tank capacity

How much live rock do you have. And do you have a protein skimmer. I am to lazy to read the list of stuff you have? What kind of filtration do you have. How often do you feed your fish. What kind of lights. If you can give a list of the HARDWARE it would be good. Also do you use reverse osmosis water.
