I just started up my 120g tank and my main pump is a GenX 70. It makes a lot of noise and I was wondering if there is any way to decrease the hum. I haven't mounted it on anything, I just have it resting on a towel that is folded to help muffel the hum. Any suggestions??

I had a similar pump and the noise drove me nuts. Bought a Poseidon PS4 Titanium pump. Best money I ever spent, the pump is dead silent. Try putting your current pump on an old mouse pad, that might stop some of the vibrating noise. If you go with the PS4, it has 1" fittings, so you have take that into account

You cannot get the flow nor head pressure from an Eheim to compare with a Gen-X 70 (that's a huge pump your running on a 120g)
IME Panword/Bluelines are just as bad, they have a hum not from vibration of the pump on wood but just the operation of the pump itself.
Iwaki's are still the best of the three (Gen-X, Panworld/Blueline), but the Poseidon's would be the quietest by a longshot. Problem is that the Poseidon's will add 4-6 degrees of heat into your tank.

i run a gen-x pump and yes they are loud compared to blueline/panworld but they use less electricity. the only pump i know of that is not power hungry and dead silent are the red dragon pumps but they are very expensive being from germany.
