FT: Hippo Tang

I have a Blue Hippo Tang that's been in my tank for about 2 months now. He's developed HLLE and i'm afraid that since i'm pretty new at this, i won't be able to cure him. Also my tank is too small for him (46Gallon) so i'm looking to see if anyone is interested in a Hippo with HLLE. If you have a fish that will get along with my 2 clowns and 2 cardinals, then let me know. I might also be willing to sell it if anyone is interested in buying one or doesn't have anything to trade.
I love this fish so much, that it's kind of hard to let him go, but sometimes things you love, you gotta let them go as long as it will benefit them. He's a very cool fish, i love watching him swim and rub against the rocks.

I would try to cure him first.

What have you been feeding him?

I feed my hippo Seaweed salad & spirulina enriched brine shrimp & he has not developed HLLE in the year I've had him, actually when I bought him from Fishtown, he had the beginnings of HLLE. Cleared right up.

I am very glad to hear you are trying to do the right thing for a fish you love. Depending on the size of the hippo currently, it may still be alright in your tank. Keep in mind that they grow big pretty fast.

The HLLD is just a case of nutritional deficiency. You need to feed him better food. I feed mine some Newlife Spectrum thera-A food. It is good quality staple food. I also give my tank some seaweed sheets, size of a playing card every other day(rubber-band the seaweed to a live rock rubble and drop it in). Then some mysis shrimp the other days. There is a thing called Selcon that adds a lot of vitamin and nutritional value to the food you soak with it.

you should buy some new life spectrum 1mm pellets for saltwater and some seaweed sheets for saltwater fishes. Consider mysis for treats. Don't just feed them plain flake food.

Your fish will get through this.

Maybe keeping him for a while to help him recover will do the OP & the fish some good.

I guess i was just worried about my Hippo and i don't want him to die, but with the advice you guys gave me i'll keep him and try to get him back to health. Sometimes i feel like i'm still too new at this to keep my Hippo happy and healthy, but then when i see him eat seaweed i get happy and hope that he'll get better!!

Just remember that the best thing you can do is to keep water quality up and provide nutritious foods. The best plan of action is to research everything in detailed so that you will be armed with the knowledge to make a difference in your Hippo Tans life. You have been given some great advice and you are on the right track to doing everything right.
