  1. Aquarium shops

    http://fins.actwin.com/dir/stores.php?c=1&r=43 This help?
  2. Lighting ratings

Lamps are rated in lumens (light output) and are usually listed on the lamp. What you're measuring is illuminance (how much light is at that location) and is dependant on the distance from the light source, efficiency of the lamp reflector, etc.
  3. salt rock.....

I buy the 50 gallon IO bags - fits into two 1.3 gallon airtight rubbermaid containers I bought with enough room for my 1/2 cup scoop. Haven't had a problem with the salt hardening up since. And when I open the 2nd container I know it's time to go pickup some more salt.
  4. Glossy or Flat Paint for backrounds?

I would imagine "(the paint) sticks well, (salt creep, etc. is) easily wiped off"
  5. hmm... I hear clicking

I've heard that a long series of clicks is a mantis expanding it's burrow in the rock and 1-3 clicks is just a pistol shrimp poppin' it's claw.
  6. Was 'Finding Nemo' Plagiarized?

And suing a few French bookstores won't make quite the headlines that a suit vs. Disney can offer. If he sues the bookstores, who's he going to get to stock his book?
  7. mixing clownfish, who knows if it can work?

The food in a clear jar trick worked for me when I had to remove my Humbug damsel. I'd recommend using the biggest jar / tupperware / acrylic container you've got. Submerge with one hand, wait for the fish to acclimate to the container and with the other hand add some brine shrimp over the...
  8. Was 'Finding Nemo' Plagiarized?

Hopefully he gets his free publicity, the bookstores restock his book and this lawsuit goes away. If he does win, start looking for animals that Disney has yet to do a movie about and let the trademarking bonanza begin! :)
  9. Will This Work

Also harder to treat if a disease breaks out.
  10. What do I need for lighting

There's not much to an average shop light - a noisy magnetic ballast, cheap steel reflector and a pair of normal (not VHO) T12 lamps. That and you'd have to look at the thing every day. I'd stick with the aquarium hoods / lights.
  11. dumb quesion about hermit crabs

A few years back when my tank was new I found a bunch of little shells in a basket at a 99 cent store. As I recall, none of the shells were ever occupied (too different from the hermit's usual shells). So, next time at the LFS I asked for some extra shells (they had a bunch at the bottom of...
  12. nemo for christmas

A word of caution - are your kids old enough to understand if "Dory goes bye-bye"? When near the tank, the first thing my 2 year old (and his friends) see is my false perc (Nemo) and "his daddy" (lettuce clip) - the other fish don't get nearly as much attention. One of the other fish could die...
  13. Nitrates high

I believe fish can accomodate these high levels if the nitrates rise gradually. Sounds like the nitrates have been rising from the dirty media in the filter. Went back and checked a lot of old messages a few weeks back - nearly every post with a subject of high nitrate levels is from a tank...
  14. UPS Recommendations

Thanks for the info - looks like an inverter is the way to go.
  15. UPS Recommendations

My 60g tank made it through the last power outage (4 hours) unscathed, but was thinking as I add more livestock ($) to the tank, would like some additional protection. Power here is pretty stable, so I'm not looking at a generator. I can easily go out and buy a UPS at any computer store, but...
