I was wondering if there were any low light SPS out there. I know this sounds like a stupid question but by low lighting I mean PC lighting. House gave me a Digitata frag and It is doing pretty good.

That would have been the one that I would have suggested as well. And fortunately there are lots of color morphs of M. Digitata's to stock with.

Lots of color morphs! Anyone have frags of these said color morphs? All I have are purple and lots of them. Anyone want to trade?

M. Digitata's that I have are orange polyps on white, orange polyps on orange, green polyps on white, green polyps on green, pink polyps on white. I'm sure there are more that I don't have either.

BTW, I also have the purple ones too.

No actually I was under the misunderstanding that all SPS were high lighting and req'd MH's. I got talking with Jim and he clued me in on the Digi and was wondering if there were others.

Chief,

I find that the term SPS refers only to the polyp size and is a poor general indicator of care requirements. It took me a while to figure that out. There are some people that feel the SPS, LPS, etc. categories are not good ways to group corals together because they can be misleading and really don't mean much.

You can always ask about specific genera or, even better, species. The care reference will be much more accurate and will help you to keep what you have alive more effectively.

Chief,

Good point. I was actually just sharing a beginners' perspective on what questions to ask. In otherwords, ask "What species are good for a certain type of care?" and describe the look of the coral you are going for. There are a lot of LPS that look like other SPS corals but do not have the requirements of the tougher species.

Maybe some stylos and pocilloporas?

ok e I'll take a look at those.
Rich Something like an orange cap are ok under PC's?

Green slimer I failed with it browned out and I got it to House before anything more happened to it. Digitata is in and looks like it is doing ok Polyps extended and looks a little brown but it's high up in the tank about 6 inches from the surface and the lights. I have the Coralife PC light 4x65W lights. 2 10k 2 actinic.

chief,

i think water quality is the most important factor... i have personally seen many nice sps tanks kept under pc's. there will defenitely be an adjustment period for any sps under different lighting conditions and i think its normal for browning. you will definitely get better colors and growth with mh's but i feel you can do it with pc's with good water quality.

if you want you can try some of my corals which came from pc's. i'll post some pics after i'm back from vaca.

Steve I want to mix it up in my tank that's all. LPS and Soft corrals are great I love mine. Acans and Frogspawn and Zoo's and leathers OH MY!! I wonder if we could get a list here of Species with both Proper and common names. I guess this should also be in the Beginner forum instead of the general forum. Mods could you move it for me please :) .
