OK MR reefers, I am taking my reef where no man has gone before. It will be going on the ceiling. I know it sounds crazy but as my set-up starts to take shape you'll have a better idea of just how crazy it really is. And I'm blaming all of this crazyness on MR. You guys have definately shown that the sky is the limit when it comes to reef tanks. In this thread I hope to show you how someone could go from simple admiration to super obsession with an apartment that is built around an aquarium. The end product (at least for now) will be a 100g reef tank with its own skylight 8 feet off of the floor and only inches away from the ceiling. My dream tank will receive most of its lighting from natural sunlight and will be the focal point of my entire apartment. Sounds crazy right? Well you are all invited to join me on this crazy reef journey. But first I want to start by explaining my apartment set-up.
I'm in a very small 2 bedroom with 1 bedroom that is a loft looking down onto my livingroom. My plan right from the beginning was to have a tank that could be seen from both the livingroom and the loft bedroom (which I use as an office). This is how the madness began.
After months of reading and researching how to keep and maintain a reef aquarium I was blessed to find a 45g glass tank on the street while I was walking my dog. Someone's trash became my treasure. To my dog's surprise I picked up the tank, threw it on my shoulder, lugged it home, and carried it up 5 flights. On March 7th 2007 on my birthday I began to set up my first reef tank. It didn't look like much but it was mine and it was free. When I added the lights, sand, protein skimmer and water I knew I would enjoy this hobby much more than I should. And the fun began.
