you should check your equipment or if you have a heater see that its not set at higher temp. Your temp reading shouldn't be almost 20 deg. different from your ambient with just power head and return pump on overnight and with no light? just my .02.....

So, yesterday i went to my lsf and explained what was going on. i figured right away that he would try and sell me a chiller, but he didnt lol. At the suggestion of some friends i was running my skimmer because that helps run the other 2 pumps on the rsm but i wasnt mixing the air with it so it has been running with out actually skimming (my friends had told me that there was nothing for me to skim at this point so no need to mix the air). He had me mix the air and im happy to say that over night my temp went down to 78.9. Im gonna see if the temp rises today with the lights on for some time. i feel like im most likely gonna have to get the chiller but id rather invest that money in making my own led set up, i feel that will be a big factor in heat reduction.

anyway i added the last pieces of lr and im happy with the way my tank looks. I know pics with no live stock is silly but i like the end result.

Hi,
Probably way to soon to see skim. It appears that your rock is very clean. No bio waste =nothing to skim. Why fix what isn't broken.Give it time and save your wallet for good stuff . The best thing rt now is patience. Also not time to do water changes first you need to finish a cycle I would even stop the skimmer. It doesn't help the cycle if there's nothing to cycle.I know Berkel by the way. They used to fix slicing machines for delis under the queensboro br then became a fish store before moving to Ditmars. Theyre the one where you need to watch your head going down to where the fish are right?

Hi,
I know Berkel by the way. They used to fix slicing machines for delis under the queensboro br then became a fish store before moving to Ditmars. Theyre the one where you need to watch your head going down to where the fish are right?

lol the fish are down stairs but i wouldnt say you need to watch your head lol. Its a awesome spot, alex is a real nice guy, called me to check up on my tank and is very helpful.

On another subject, I know its too soon i have no plans on it, no lectures please only a noob asking noob questions for when the time is right lol now that the preface is over. When i wanna get clowns, i know you have to buy them in pairs, i was planning on eventually have a pair of orange clowns and a pair of black clowns. is tha too many clowns to have? will they get along? also i will then need 2 anemones is that ok in my tank or will one set of clowns look to take over both?

for my secound question, i topped off my tank about 4 gallons a week ago, is it normal that i need like another 4 or 5 gallons to top off already? i have to constantly check on the water levels or else the skimmer doesnt work right just wanna make sure im doin as much wrong as i can lol j.k

Hey Pons and welcome to the Hobby Dude.

My Tips. - If you have not looked into it yet then you should purchase a bottle of Brightwell Aquatics Microbacter 7 and some High Proof Pure Vodka.

Here is how to use them and what they do.
http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-08/nftt/index.php
(Stick to this plan and For the cost of 1 bottle of Vodka every 3/4 months you won't have algae, Nitrate, Phosphate, and your water will be crystal clear always.)

I started my tank like this from the beginning. Months later I'm overstocked with fish, corals, and my skimmer fills up to the tip every week. Everything is happy and colorful and other than a bout of red bugs im still good.

Chillers...ehhh. I don't like chillers because they are expensive, use a lot of electricity and are an easy way out of an otherwise very easily solved problem. Red Sea Max owners I know have all removed their light fixture insides which is easy because they come out real easy. They then Used Hole Saws or a Dremel to Dremel out additional holes. They purchased 120 or 80mm Fans and wired them to a simple AC adapter. They plugged this ac adapter into a Reef Keeper Lite which also controlled their lights and basically had the fans come on in series to bring down the temperature. To Wire 2 or 3 additional fans into your hood is about
6 per Fan X3 - 18$
Ac Adapter - 16.99$ Radio Shack
Reefkeeper Lite - 99$

Qurantine Tank

Buy a 20$ 20/10 Gallon Qurantine Tank with a HOB filter (one of the quick start tank setups at petco for 56.99 will work real well.) Leave in the Carbon and the sponge and run the filter on the RSM for a week then transfer it to the 20 Gal tank and run salt water in the 20 gal Tank. Add no more than 2/3 small fish or 1 slightly larger fish at a time. To the Qurantine.Make sure some PVC is in there and one of those in tank ammonia monitors work great.

Dip Tank.
Buy a 10 Dollar 2.5 Gallon tank. This is your dip tank. Any SPS or Softies you get should bathe in this "Dip" Tank for a Few hours after you get them. A 5 gallon bucket does a nice job as well but it helps to be able to get REAL close to the coral to inspect it. Treat your Corals with Coral/RX in your dip tank preferably over night. 1 Small Air Stone or Air Bar attached to an Air pump will provide all the water movement needed in that small tank. Alternatively they sell extremely small Cascade In tank powerheads that work well for water movement. I use one in my 2.5g Nano.

Lastly understand that setbacks, crashes, and issues are all a part of this hobby. Record your system tests in a notebook only used for reef and be diligent about it. Note changes you made. It will help trouble shooting problems. Always do a BEFORE and AFTER. If you add a calcium additive note what calcium was BEFORE you added the additive and AFTER what it is. Same for ALK etc.

Dosing

Start early on a 2 part Dosing Solution. Dose... AS NEEDED since you won't have much in your tank.
Purchase Baking Soda (Arm and Hammer best (PURE)
10lb Bag of DOW Flake/Pedadow from Home Depot
Here is what to do and how to use them.

Here are some pics of the tank and the "Mods" I've done
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/52601136@N06/4903594920/" title="IMG_1539 by Godlike clothing, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4097/4903594920_113516a726.jpg" width="374" height="500" alt="IMG_1539" /></a>

This is a 33.4 inch ice cap Blue LED I attached to the front flap on the rsm250, it fit so perfect you would think it was made for it. Not to mention this one strip lights up the entire tank, it was worth every penny and i highly recommend it.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/52601136@N06/4903588868/" title="IMG_1543 by Godlike clothing, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4121/4903588868_5b641b7416.jpg" width="500" height="374" alt="IMG_1543" /></a>

This skimmer is an upgrade that i purchased cause I hated every problem i had with the stock skimmer. Its the euroreef nano skimmer skims the hell out of the tank, you just have to work hard at tweaking it. I dont not recommend it but i dont necessarily recommend it either. On the good side its a direct fit and really skims hardcore.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/52601136@N06/4903590112/" title="IMG_1544 by Godlike clothing, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4082/4903590112_b9d12125ea.jpg" width="500" height="374" alt="IMG_1544" /></a>

I removed the carbon bags and replaced it with a carbon chamber. I originally had it in the right chamber but after the chiller i removed the surface fans on the left and plumbed it through where it was. I used pvc to plum around the bend, then hose for the rest.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/52601136@N06/4903005827/" title="IMG_1541 by Godlike clothing, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4136/4903005827_43879ec2d0.jpg" width="374" height="500" alt="IMG_1541" /></a>

This is the chiller side of the rsm plumbed and ready to go. I cut some holes to run extra wires through the back.
