I'm sure the biggest question your going to get is if you have enough pods to keep them well nurtured? You've been a reefer for some time so you should be able to make a good guess to your refugium to see if it is stable and able to maintain them. Otherwise, a close fish store that sells live pods.

Wassup Wins, You have to know what you currently have, and make sure you get the opposite sex. I know if you introduce 2 of the same sex they will fight..

i think if they are not both males, they should be fine.
they do eat a lot more pods than people realized. when i first got one, it wiped out all pods in a 75g with a 30g. fuge. now i have a pair in a 300g system with a separate algae tank/pod factory. they do eat pellets but probably as a supplement to the live pods.

you can add either a male/female or female/female or even have 3 female/female/male potentially without fights but it all depends if you are able to train them on to prepared foods and pod population density....i know someone who will regularly place mandarin in very very tiny tanks and start them on live brine, then move to frozen brine, followed by frozen mysis and other frozens and yout could even take it a step further and work with them to pick at pellets and flakes as well

This is a male. The female will not have the spike on the top fin.

I have a large male red and a smaller female blue. The male was first and I saw him eating frozen so I decided to try a second. If the first did not eat frozen then I would never have tried a second one.
They are doing great in a large tank with plenty of rock work.

I had a psychedelic and a spotted mandarin and they paired up in my 270 gallon and spawned several times until kicking the bucket a year and a half later. There needs to be a constant supply of food since they pick at rocks all day or have them trained to eat prepared foods. Good luck!

how do they spawn? i have recently seen my pair do the mating dance after the lights go out but don't know if they actually spawned.

They kept on swimming up and down the water column near the surface for a couple hours until they got tired, lol... One of the tummies looked bloated all the time.
