Hi,

A friend of mine was thinking about getting into the hobby and possible purchasing one of these:

http://www.ecoxotic.com/products/led-aquariums/ecoxotic-25-gallon-aquarium.html

Has anyone owed these? I want to know if its worth the purchase and most importantly the time to put into it for a first timer. He likes the look of the rimless but has very limited space and is why he likes this tank; everything is right behind and takes up very little space. The light will have to be another issue as he is in no way looking to pay for the light that comes with it... Its about 600! So we are in search for a light that will fit this setup. Any suggestions of what type of lighting to add?

Please let me know what you guys think.

Thanks,
D

It's nice, but your paying for the name. For 500 bucks alone your getting tank and stand only. You can find full set ups for that price!

That tank looks to me like an exact copy of a solana just 2" smaller in every direction. I believe the skimmer is the same. It should be a very nice all in one. As for the light. $600 is crazy.

Well, do you want opinions on which light to get? If so, what do you want to do? T5, halide? Led? And is it possible to hang it or get something like a current USA hang on back tank bracket kit? Or just deal with legs on fixture? What is the length across and do you plan on doing it in? Full mixed reef, sps dominate or simple reef? Or fish only?

I can tell you with 100% certainty the Marineland Reef Capable will not be enough. I have one and only use it on a 6" shallow tank.

Go with a RapidLED/BoostLED PAR38 Bulb and Arm. It'll look better and perform better.

I dont think a Par38 bulb is not going to give you enough coverage on an 18" tank. You will have shaded spots and will need at least 2 of these to cover the tank. I used a Marineland reef capabalbe LED for a while and while it is not the most advanced light on the market. It had enought light and PAR to support both SPS and clams. That tank is only 18" deep and if there is any sand and rock it will reduce the depth tremendously.

One PAR38 Bulb can cover it. You just have to make sure you get the correct optics. Of course, one would configure the placement and stuff to make certain corals work.

Color rendition is also on the 10k side on the Reef Capable LED, I forgot to mention that.
