Chiromanta was over my place recently and, noticing red cyano starting up in my 180. He recommended three day blackout and UV sterilizer. I've tried everything else so what the hey. So three day blackout it was and I threw cheapo 25 watt DFS UV sterilizer in section of sump where return pump returns water to tank.
I disconnected lights on DT, stopped feeding, draped lightweight covers over tank, blocking off all light, and otherwise kept everything going (RP, skimmer, ATS, heaters, etc.). After three days, removed covering and restarted DT lights. Red cyano, green and brown hair, ALL algae gone. ATS and skimmer plugged along during blackout period. Now, a few weeks later, tank is still algae free. Have seen no problems with corals or fish in tank as a result.
FWIW,
Mike
