I thought that pistols were known to occasionally kill and eat small sleeping fish.....and about the snap/pop, isnt that how they stun the prey(ie your other fish)
i read up on the pistol shrimp there pretty cool, they have one claw bigger then the other wish has a strong muscle that allows it to shoot a burst of bubbles towards its prey, like a gun and then :eat: :eat:
you should probably get an amblyeleotris goby to go with it. I read somewhere that the life expectancy of the shrimp is very very short without a goby.
Oh he is soooo cool!! We've had our pistol shrimp almost since the beginning of setting up our tank.
He bothers none of the fish but has accumilated a snail graveyard under his rockwork. We feed him, but every night-- you hear him popping/snapping, the snails don't seem to learn that rock is off limits if they want to save themselves. Often times I forget it's him and go around the house looking for what the heck is making the noise.
He also doesn't seem to bother with our other shrimp, we have four cleaners and a fire shrimp.. all for the same amount of time.

this is true in the wild, where there area number of predators that will welcom the chance to have a Pistol Shrimp snack..(in a tank where u don't have anything that will eat it , it will live just as long )
Pistol Shrimps are partially blind, and they use the Goby in a (symbiotic relationship).
The Goby gets a place to live , and snacks from the messy eating Shrimp.
The Shrimp gets a "seeing eye fish". While outside his hole (he keeps one antena on the Goby at all times) The Goby stays alert and at the first sign of danger heads back into the hole and the Shrimp retreats with him.
