I plan on setting up a new frag tank. I wanted to see if anyone know if i would be ok just collecting some water from my currenty reef tank and pour some of that water into the new tank. Basically, so i can keep the bacteria. By adding some reef tank water and adding new saltwater will this casue the tank to cycle again?

Why don't you just do a big water change to the reef and take that water and put it in the frag tank.. Can you plumb the frag tank to the reef tank??

I plan on leaving my display tank alone the one in long island. The frag tank in brooklyn; I am just bring the water over when i do a water change on the tank in long island this weekend.

Do you think i can put in some of the mushroom and leather frags i have while transfering the water?

Or will that be too stressful for these softies?

It would probably be best to take the water and a piece of live rock from your display tank to set up the new frag tank.
How are you planning on adding filtration for this frag tank? You would probably need the same live rock/sand and such that you already have in your display tank.

If you are using sand in the frag tank i would siphon some of it from the display. I am setting up a frag tank now but not plumbing it into the main tank. The way i am looking to do it is from doing a big water change on the display of about 40 gallons and using that water along with the reef rubble i have been accumulating in the sump of the display. I think that should be good enough so that i wouldnt have to cycle again but i am going to run the tank without any corals in it for 2 weeks with skimmer and light just in case. Then test, water change and it is time to go. Mine is a 40 breeder and its 1 floor down from the display. I think the sand would help a lot with keeping the bacteria but i dont want sand in the frag tank.

I plan on use the penguin bio wheel power filter, my old in tank concurrent protein skimmer and penguin power jet for current. Some sand and original tank water.

Unless you really plan on doing water changes every week religiously, i think the biowheel will make the nitrate creep up.
