I woke up this morning at 5 am to go to work and saw that my tank light had started a storm cycle , if any of you have a.i. lights you might want to stop using this function .

whenever i get up throughout the night i tend to look into my tank to see if all is well, this morning when i went to my tank as this lightning show was going on i saw to my surprise !! my sawtooth tang floating sideways , my female clownfish facedown tail up in the gravel as a dead submarine would look and 1 of my chromis laying on its side inside a piece of live rock!!! angry and jumping i went and got my net after i turned the lights on to get sight of the dead ones i went and got my net to do the scoop when all of a sudden in this 5 minute time period my fish all began to swim again!! wtf!! is going on in here ! anyhow i now have reason to believe that the lightning effect caused a dazed or even shocking efrect to the systems of these fish!! and we know sress equals death when fish go haywire!.

after some long thinking on the train i realized that in nature fish will encounter rumbling and some lightning and the reality is that a great majority of the fish we buy are all tank raised and many if any have never encountered flashing lights or anything outside 4 glass walls!!

i meant well but i think it was a bad idea to use this feature , so if any other people have had this happen to them let me know, and remember this is a learning and informative thread so if your gonna post i told you so or what did you think would happen replies ! keep em to yourself .

I'm still not 100% convinced this is needed in our setups. I also feel that the simulated lightening in our tanks is MUCH brighter than in nature. I would like to see video of the storm mode as I think the pattern may not be "Natural" and like people, random flashing can cause stress and seizures. Keep me posted.

So what your saying is if you want to catch a fish use the lightning storm mode? lol

Yea I dont use that on my units. I thought maybe you had something else going on with your tank but for you to say they starting swimming again after it stopped seems to make the lightning the culprit. Thanks for the input.

I use this function with my AI lights.

I set it for the lowest frequency and at most once a day.

Meanwhile in the Bat Cave

My yellow coris wrasse got spooked by a storm and became carpet anemone food.

I have not used the storm setting on my AI units yet simply because i just didn't want that kind of effect. However, this is the first time that I've heard of this type of reaction to the setting. Is it possible that maybe they had an epileptic seizure or a paralyzing effect to the setting. In nature when a lightning storm happens I don't think fish have any choice but to endure the storm, but they may also hide or retreat to cover until such events pass. maybe someone who has a bit more knowledge can chime in and give an opinion.
