Let me preface this question with an apology and a thankyou. Sorry for all the dumb question posts. Thankyou for answering them. Now on to the question at hand.

I'm setting up a 55 and I would like to get lighting from the start that won't prohibit me from being able to grow certain types of sps. In short I'd like to buy a lighting system that I can set up(DIY is fine too) and not have to add to in the future. Is metal halide my cheapest option in the long run, even if it costs more up front? Thanks in advance guys, I'd be more lost than I am without this website and all you wonderful people.

IMO there really are no short-cuts in lighting. MH are great for intense light to simulate noon/afternoon sun but, IMO should not be run all day (4-6 hours is plenty). You realy need fluorescent lighting for all day general light. For a 55 you could use PC because the tank is not that deep but VHO would work too. MH's can really heat up the watter if left on all day and if you use them less you don't need to replace the bulbs as often either. I have seen several tanks where the lights come on in stages. First NO bulbs, then VHO's,next the MH's. For most corals it's not how long the lights are on but how intense the light is that makes them happy.

thanks for the tip zm. noticed you were from sf. I live in brookings, Do you order most of your livestock or are there any good places in the general area? The only place I've seen with marine livestock is Safari Land, and they don't seem to have a great selection.
