There has been a lot of speculation and concern floating around amongst various groups lately. The "discovery" of the MAMTI proposal, and the proposed legislation from the Congressman from Hawaii have rasied many questions that are deserving of discussion. I would like to extend an invitation to those interested parties to begin the discussion here. I for one have questions about the future of this industry, but am not ready by a long shot to take a "the sky is falling" approach. I do however feel that the lack of transparency has contributed to the current climate of suspicion. It is unclear why the MAMTI proposals and documents were publicly posted on many websites, yet no one seems to know of them or be willing to discuss them. If the documents were posted in error and were not yet meant to be made public, please inform me so that I may respond accordingly. Otherwise the assumption is that this information is in the public domain and available for discussion and comment. If this is the case, I feel that it is your duty and responsibility to be available for questions, concerns, and discussions. You have my assurance that any such discussion will take place under fair and respectful circumstances. I personally have some questions regarding these documents and MAC's plans to transform the industry, but am still willing to give the organization the benefit of the doubt to explain themselves and their long term goals and intentions. I do not believe that MAMTI is the end of the Industry and see much of it as necessary to achieve a viable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly chain of custody. I do believe however that there are some serious ramifications with the proposals as written, especially concerning fish supply and independent retailers. The longer these concerns are met with silence, the more suspicions will be confirmed. I do not relish the role of being the fly in anyone's ointment, but am not worried about playing such if necessary.
