this was in the water on the side of a dock in the bay at Norfolk Virginia.

My wife wanted to know what it was and I had no idea so she told me to find out

There was a lot of it, and plenty of crabs crawling around on it too.

How long ago?

I was there as a kid and I remember it not being very nice.

Now the waterfront is nice looking, its been revitalized! hehe

Bryan,

It does look like a sponge. I suppose it could also be a bryozoan but it's hard to tell without a close up shot.

Docks are great to look at for marine life! They are always submerged so you are seeing subtidal fauna without having to dive.

Without a closer picture my guess because of location, growth pattern, coloration, etc. would be an invasive species of Porifera (sponge) most likely Halichondria bowerbanki.

You could have done that just by telling her it's a Pocillifeopsis graudunderpora. She wouldn't know the difference

Thanks man

Actually, we have discussed this, and neither of us can decide what it was that made her go out with me. My bet is that it was alcohol, drugs, insanity, or a combination of the above.

Why invasive?

Because it's not a native species of Porifera to that area, it was accidently introduced by most likely being transported in bilges or on hulls of ship. It is crowding out the native sponges and corals there.
