Today is a sad sad day around here ...

I woke up this morning to glance in the tank and find my perfectly healthy Red Stripe Anthias stuck to the Vortech. I cannot even begin as to how disappointed I am. Poor guy was one of my favorite fish, always all over the place. He was still semi alive but when I turned the Vortech off he couldn't swim anymore, who knows how long he was on there. I thought they would be able to swim off of it no problem.

Anyone else have something like this happen to them?

RIP Pretty fishy...

a friend of mine lost a healthy copperband butterfly to his vortech. There have been reports of mostly inverts, shrimp in particular, getting sucked by it. This is why the foam covers were invented for them.

My copperband and lyretail anthias are fine with it. I've seen a fish that looked on its way out before and next day it was dead on the vortech. Besides that, I never seen a healthy fish get sucked into one. I have 2 vortech's in a 75g, so if it were a common problem, the probability of it happening to me are high. Mine are on full strength but on pulse.

Pulse mode it is then. Normally we have it on reef crest mode and hadn't had a problem. I had done a big clean up blowing the rocks off last night and turned the Vortech up all the way solid, so that the crap wouldn't settle back down and get wisked away. Never going to do that again that's for sure. Without being there to keep an eye on what's going on.

Thanks for the condolences and advice.

I lost a naso but since then I try to keep it at a low lagoon mode.I found that the foam covers only work as long as you don't have on of those bulldozing turbos in your tank, of which I have three. sorry for your loss I know the feeling.

I lost a clown fish to a koralia, It tried to host in it for some reason, even tried to feed it shrimp. Yes i did see that behavior, unfortunatly didn't think it would be dumb enough to venture too far in, I was wrong.

oh yes sorry for your loss.

That was my biggest fear with our Clowns. Thankfully they wised up and found the Anemone. Sorry to hear that yours met his demise in such a way.

Thanks for the condolences guys and gals. Craig is a bit relieved he is gone:irked: he had a tidbit of an attitude with his tank mates. I think that is part of the reason I liked him so much. Kind of reminded me of myself at times.

YES! vortechs are fish killers.
I lost a healthy copperband to one. the flat cbb shape and vortech do not mix well.
my vortech was also close to the tank wall which did not help matters.

I now have the foam covers on all my vortechs, for the peace of mind I'll take the slight flow reduction.

not at all, go read the ecotech forum on RC there are plenty of fish deaths reported. the majority of them being CBB's

big grill + powerful motor = fish sucker uppers :bablefish

Jon when you say "Vortech's are fish killers" it makes it sound like using one is certain death to all fish inhabitants in your system which is VERY far from the truth = hyperbolic. Does it happen-- apparently so, does it happen frequently-- not to my knowledge.

Sorry Prattreef to find humor in during your loss, but that is a pretty friendly clown fish.

i tried to the foam on, but it kept on blowing off.
