I don't really post much cause I am still new to the hobby, but I am on the site a lot cause of the people that I met and chat with daily...This site gives people like me a chance to buy corals at a great rate...i do not abuse the site though by selling high priced corals....I agree that maybe only donor's can buy or sell...that way at least mr is benefiting from these people. They never sell the crazy priced corals anyway...usually I see in the posts that they actually get told off by a lot of people...But I agree with ya Rick...it is bs! :biggrin: Add this one to my posting # :wink1:

you have to have your first pictures approved by a mod so why not the same for selling, i am not trying to be a prick and i do love having the f\s forum, but as this site gets bigger and bigger. some change isn't bad, I mean look how many people jumped from the neighbor site once they weren't allowed to post stuff for sale or view with out being a paid member, i mean not for nothing but is being a donor to have access to all feature's that bad ? It still would be a free site, but not with full access

Rick the reason for the approval on pictures is to keep porn off the site. MR is a very busy place and having to police every selling ad prior to posting would keep a Mod busy 24/7.
As far as the folks from the NJ site , first off they are a CLUB, not an internet site. They closed thier forum due to all of the 'stealth-vendoring' that was going on there. They charge for vendors to use their club selling forums and were losing money due to this. It was their right to close thier clubs forum to them.
Unfortunately we inherited a lot of stealth vendors due to that move and we are still doing our best to identify them and have them apply to be vendors here (we also do not allow stealth vendoring , and do encourage our membership to report 'members' who buy things in our selling forum and then turn around & chop it up and resell the pieces). Many a time our members have called someone out here for doing that and frankly, I hope that continues.

As pointed out earlier - if we require a 'donation' to be allowed to use our Marketplace, then we are no longer a 'free' site and that is not our goal or purpose.

How many of our new members (low or no post count) have purchased all or most of their equipment through our Marketplace? How many of our regular members have decided to do a tank upgrade due to a larger tank popping up in the Marketplace that was too good a deal to pass up? Often times those tanks are placed there by people we rarely or have never heard from before - is that a bad thing? You recently were involved in one of those deals, do you think it was a bad thing??

If you shop the Marketplace wisely you can find some great deals. You can also find sales there that you chose to pass up...your choice, and that is key..it is YOUR CHOICE to purchase or not purchase there and THAT is a benefit provided to EVERYONE on this free site.

and i really do see both sides of the fence and understand both sides, RC is a free site, but you have limited access to certain things unless you become a paid member, plus i dont think the minor contribution would hurt the site, shoot people paying more for a single zoa polyp then that

There are always 2 sides to everything. I have been a member for a while now. Who cares about whats for sale and by who.And also post count. It offers new and old members items at a better price.I have a low post count and have offered items on here for free. I also met some good people. I dont think everyone is as good as they think.Just meanig some advice is not as good as others .What works for some doent work for others. Just for someone to post a responce just to up post count doesnt make it any better. Just my thought dont hang me for my reply just my thoughts.

I think the whole thing behind this is pretty much more to do with the few people that are looking to make a quick buck, not the ones upgrading or leaving the hobby. But like that armani guy who tried to sell the 80 dollar chalice for 900 and came out and said it was Tyree with no proof to back it up. We all know the prices of dry goods for the most part. So you can easily say hey those pumps or lights cost X amount new. Then you have people coming in and trying to sell LE corals from Jason, Fox, Tyree or any other high end name. Some people are not aware that these corals have actual lineage and documentaion to go with them. So this guy was preying on the people that had no clue about an atual Tyree coral. These are the people that as a community we need to keep an eye out for. I don't think the people that come on here to sell a tank break down are hurting the site, They are helping the site and at least they know their livestock is most likely going to someone who can care for them properly.

Currently, on the first page of the marketplace, one seller has donated to MR. This means that if you required a donation, it's likely that many people would go elsewhere. So requiring a donation would kill the marketplace.

Post count doesn't mean much. Someone can post all day on a forum, and still be a scumbag. Be cautious when purchasing, check reefer ratings, and leave reefer ratings for people.

There's nothing wrong with leaving a good or neutral rating with the comment "showed up 30 minutes late, but decent guy". If people start doing this, you'll be able to determine who you want to deal with. If I see that 5 people said that the same guy is always late, I'm not going to deal with him if I'm on a tight schedule, but maybe I wouldn't mind on a lazy Sunday. It comes down to everyone who buys and sells to make the community better.

We're all adults here, and we shouldn't need mommy and daddy to tell us when we can and can't do things.

On another note, if you think MR is only after money, then don't pay to be a vendor. No one is forcing you to pay a dime as a vendor or a member so stop whining about things. If your MR vendor fees are so high that you're not making money, either stop paying them, or take a look at your business model, and realize that maybe you just need to run a better business. Advertising isn't cheap.

ok . i have an idea...how about..................LETS NOT CHANGE ANYTHING!!!! sound good?? hahahahaha...selling higher and getting ripped off is part of sales..car sales, electronic sales, everything sales...all we can do is encourage new members to do some research and ask around before making an insane purchase..im a member on other sites..but i hardly go on them...so if things were going great before..why fix it??

Totally agree with DEL on this. Didn't even seem worthwhile to post to this thread as I had nothing constructive to add but I truly believe that things are great the way things are right now. Everyone's a newbie at one point and will learn the ropes.

Putting a post or time requirement on people to sell here would curtail the amount of items available. If people really want that sort of rule I guess we can examine it but I personally don't understand it. If you don't want to shop for items, DON'T GO TO THE MARKETPLACE. It is the only page where people are allowed to sell things (aside from around swap time). The quality of content on the board ebbs and flows, but it isn't the fault of the marketplace. There are a lot of different people here and they all have different interests. It wouldn't surprise me that there are a lot of people who only come here to sell, they're not interested in being a part of the community. It's their choice. Forcing people to have more posts to sell their items is only going to decrease the level of quality content across the board.

I like that the community is outspoken and calls out people when they are out of line. I like that the mods give some room for people to say what needs to be said. I wouldn't change a thing about the market place.

I would encourage other members to speak up when you see some BS going on.(in a responsible way)

I would encourage the mods to push the vendor thing a little harder. especially with people who constantly are selling "just a few" high end pieces for top dollar. If you are selling 1k bucks a year in corals.. even if its only 10 corals..imo your a vendor. thats just my .02$
