I was wondering if anyone ever applyed for permission to import using a non designated port

What port did you use?

were did you import from?

If your thinking that landing corals is this easy .....your in for a surprise.
Corals are a controlled substance .......Permits are required to import them .
The permits are in short sulpply. Only so many hard corals are permited for harvest each year. The island collectors and LAx wholesalers are standing in line for the limited CITES each quarter and its alway less then demand .....and they are ahead of you in line.

Even if you can find the right government official to bribe in Indonesia and you have paperwork that lists more then soft corals on rock.
The little issue of flying the coral out of the islands.
See with existing exporters, Tuna and Kava containers ......there is zero space on the planes to ship your stuff.
The real ultra corals come out of Bali, Solomons, Vanuatu , Tonga and Fiji.
A few Exporters on those islands are closing shop because they cant get the corals off the islands. There are hundreds of thousands of AQUA coral s ready to be sold in the waters of the pacific .......but there are more corals then there are ways to get then to the USA.

There is a world of difference between importing fish and landing coral.

Why then can I get boxs full of Zoo's landed from Tonga and Solomon transhipped 50-60 to the box using the islanders dry ship method...Not sure when the cites are ready I was under the impression I could get them now..my tranship contact informed me of the box quanity they could pack like this when I inquired just weeks ago

I will not worry much with large quanitys of acros transhipped with a connection..I'll get them from the wholesalers myself in miami and la..though I have experimentaly transhiped them in the past and it seems the smaller the better far as mortality go's I only added a few to a box so cant really go on this experiance..with a connection

I mainly want to learn to import case I move near Tampa or mabey even miami one day to start a import business in the future I can import Maylasia and several others for fish and stuff..I just like learnin..
transhiping seems just as good as importing to me
Waiting in line for stuff sucks
I had to wait 30 min at autozone today then my part was out of stock..advance next door had it though :wink:

oh.. I have transhiped the best metalic green euphyillia from Bali in the past
this transhipers been in business for a long time so gets the cites
I can get Bali Solomon Tonga Fiji Veitnam and more

Transshipping is part of the existing trade currently in place ...........thats quite different from your questions about importing yourself.

And yes, the current system of transhippers and wholesalers works quite well. .......so why the urge to circumnavigate the current system?

I did not realize the price differance was not that much...between the two , until just reveiwing some exporters price lists recently

I want to import more than just coral in the future...And as mentioned before I love learning..so want to know as much as possible whether I import or not..If I do ever relocate near a suitable hub I will already have studyed all the ins and outs that I possibly could

We have 5 acres here in NC and its hard to find ground reasonable near the metros were all the hubs are located so most likely this is going to be where we stay

my question in this thread is
"Has anyone ever applyed for permission to import to a nondesignated port"
beside that everone here seems so closed lipped & negative about others learning or wanting to do it, I thought I'd share the links with others that might want to learn some as well
I just would like to learn all my options before setting my course :)

I have never heard of anyone landing coral at a non "port of entry"
I doubt there are any international flights from the islands landing at these smaller airports anyway ...... Even Miami Chicago and such have very few flights. So even if you could get a special permission slip, The chances of getting an inspector there ontime and a Pacific airline to land there at all would be quite troublesome.......

Im not just interested in pacific flights,Tampa is a non designated port and it is a HUGE airport,this one was my first thought.
I want to find out all the other non designated ports as well

I've talked to most importers in miami so know they still get alot of cool stuff as well,if I did live near one of these ports I would try importing just for the experiance probably

btw most pacific exporters freight weight charts listed miami and atl....even if the transit was a little longer...like transhipping....they must can be imported into these spots..just would have to be more selective on the stock...Id quess

I know indo gos to your ATL port...thats what sunpet gets 60 boxs per month I think...the transit may be longer but its done regularly none the less
I have a clam/softie exporter in veitnam that will contact me after their chiense new year with a flight scedule to miami boltimore and ATL..if they can infact ship to them..right now they are partying I think..said they will contact me feb 14th

steve I think it was told me 60 I think, on jakarta coral
oh..... another thing about exporters I learned is their prices are not set in stone

no I am not interested in buying from them if thats what you mean..what do you mean repropagating...though I do still have some personal stock from bary thats still kickin purchased from a local pet shop from when he had" marine life of atlanta"

I thought you were interested in starting a coral farm ...... ?
Only one out of million wild corals out on the reef are of trade value.
Of those limited color morphs, only certain species respond to propagation.
To make money with a coral farm you need a grand supply of farm grade corals to chop. That supply is getting smaller and smaller each year.
Not because the wild reefs are running out of corals .......but its the lack of intense color morphs still out on the reefs that will limit your quest for worthwhile brood stock.
