I realize that hardware stores carry the thin-walled PVC (not quite sure of the name) but is it worth the extra I.D.? Seems a little flimsy. I've only used schedule 40 PVC but have heard of peeps going with the thin stuff. :)

I cant stand the thin wall because it can break to easy when I am cutting it. I go out of my way for the thick wall PVC.

agreed.. i even used schedule 80 when possible.

Schedule 80 is overkill. Standard wall PVC is more than adaquate for what we do. I don't like the thin walled stuff either.

ok I'll be the voice of discontent here... thin wall stuff is fine, yeah it can break if you cut it violently (ie use a sawsall), but there is very little pressure in your pipes so it is more than adequate for tank applications. However is it worth the extra space? hardly. Get what ever is cheapest at the store.

Pressure wise I agree. I just don't like working with it. It is flimsy to cut with PVC shears.

I always use the schedule 40 stuff outside the tank. Inside, I use the ABS stuff b/c it's dark grey and tends to make the returns a little more transparent to the casual observer. My local stores don't carry the black stuff in 1" or I'd use it.

Educate me...What's the advantage to using thin-walled pvc?

I generally use sched 40. I agree that sched 80 is overkill and the thicker wall just means that much less inside diameter. Less diameter means more resistance and less flow, although it's probably not a significant effect until you get to the smaller pipe sizes...

Actually, it's the opposite. The outside stays consistent and the inside diameter varies. This is why you can glue sched 40 pipes into sched 80 bulkheads etc...

Really!?! I just measured my sch 40 1" standpipe, and it's exactly 1". So, the I.D. for a thinner-walled 1" PVC pipe would be wider?

Larger ID so lower flow velosity which equals less losses and more GPH. Probably not a significant change with the flow volumes and lengths we are talking about.
