Does anyone recharge their own anion cartridges? I read on the SpectraPure site that the SilicaFree cartridge can be recharged at home with NaOH. Is this cost effective? Is it dangerous? I have to replace my anion cartridge on my SpectraPure 5-stage unit about once a month at $33 a pop plus shipping and would really like to find a way around this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The TWP recharge instructions in the reefs.org library should get you started in the right direction--there's a very long winded version and a short version. At least read the long one.

The resin is ok with lye, but I wouldn't be too sure about the housing and any retention screens or software (o-rings). It shouldn't be very hard, and you should be able to do it for under $5.
